The Wrap: Recovery centre relocating, PET scan fallout, Arniel bullish on Jets and Comedy in the Great Outdoors

An addiction treatment centre that only opened last month will move after being told businesses aren’t allowed to operate in the residential condominium development in Linden Woods.

Michael Bruneau, president and chief executive officer of Aurora Recovery Centre, a privately owned drug and alcohol treatment centre north of Gimli, was converting the 23 condo units he purchased at a development at 873 Waverley St., into the Aurora Family Reunification Village, a facility where parents could get treatment while living with their children.

But, now Bruneau says he will be relocating the business after receiving opposition from dozens of condo owners in the rest of the development who said businesses of all types are not allowed to operate there under condo rules agreed to by everyone who buys a unit there — including him.

Manitoba’s only producer of medical isotopes for cancer tests descended into a “sorry state” due to persistent bureaucratic delays by Shared Health, a physician told the Free Press Wednesday.

Dr. Sandor Demeter, a nuclear medicine physician, is hopeful deficiencies that led to two consecutive failed regulatory inspections of the Winnipeg Cyclotron Facility will be resolved following the recent hiring of the site’s first non-acting director in about five years.

The facility at Health Sciences Centre failed a Health Canada inspection in April, after officials determined necessary changes following a previous failed inspection in October had not yet been completed.

The cyclotron facility continues to operate, while it is listed as non-compliant by the federal regulator.

Since he was hired in late May as the successor to Rick Bowness, Winnipeg Jets new head coach Scott Arniel has been working at a frenetic pace putting together a coaching staff and preparing for the upcoming season.

So what have the first seven weeks on the job been like for the man who is going to be running the bench of his adopted hometown team?

“It’s been busy,” Arniel said on Wednesday during a one-on-one conversation with hockey writer Ken Wiebe.

Local enthusiasts of standup comedy will venture beyond the city’s basement rooms and dimly lit lounges into a verdant outdoor venue this weekend for the Winnipeg debut of a popular Canadian comedy festival.

The Great Outdoors Comedy Festival has attracted some of the biggest names in the business while expanding to eight North American cities — including a three-day stint at Assiniboine Park featuring headliners Tom Segura (Friday), Bill Burr (Saturday) and Nate Bargatze (Sunday).

The festival will take over the Lyric Theatre field with a large stage, food trucks, a bar and merch tent.
