Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'It’s a complex case'
John Pearson, president of ICI properties, is suing Sandy and Robert Shindelman of Shindico Realty Inc. Today, during the third day of the civil trial, Pearson told court he inadvertently discovered financial statements showing an $85,000 “bribe” paid to a company owned by Phil Sheegl, the city’s former chief administrator.

'Entirely another level of blatant disregard for safety'
A Winnipeg man has admitted he was driving at least 159 km/h seconds before a fatal hit-and-run collision with a cyclist.
Rob Jenner, 61, was cycling along Wellington Cresent on his way to work on June 6 when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Beckham Severight, 19, who had his learner’s permit and was driving with his roommate.
Dean Pritchard reports on Severight’s guilty pleas to dangerous driving causing death and leaving the scene of an accident.

'When someone goes missing, we go looking'
The effort to search a landfill for the remains of two slain Indigenous women is on track and preliminary excavation is underway, provincial officials said today.
Premier Wab Kinew met at Prairie Green Landfill with media, Indigenous groups and relatives of the women, who were victims of a Winnipeg serial killer.
A road and power line have been installed and interviews for searchers are in progress, provincial officials said. Excavators have started moving material on top of a targeted zone at the landfill where the women are believed to be buried.
Tyler Searle was at today’s event at the private landfill northwest of the city.

'It’s football... You want that contact'
The Guardian Cap is a padded shell affixed to the outside of a football player’s helmet; it’s intended to reduce the severity of impact during a collision, preventing concussions.
The NFL and CFL have adjusted rules to allow players to wear the cap during games — but only a handful of players are doing so.
Sportswriter Joshua Frey-Sam examines why the protective equipment doesn’t seem to be catching on.

'It’s really about... the stupid things we do when we’re in love'
The Elixir of Love is a two-act comedy about Adina, a proud, beautiful, successful young woman, and Nemorino, the poor villager who is desperately, miserably in love with her.
So, Nemorino pays a visit to Dr. Dulcamara for a love potion he can drink to help him up his game, in modern parlance.
Arts writer Jen Zoratti talks to cast and director about the timelessness of the nearly 200-year-old rom-com, on at the Manitoba Opera this weekend.
(Hot tip: the director says: “If someone has never been to the opera before, this is a fantastic introduction.”)
