Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'Very disturbing, very concerning'
Police believe a fatal shooting outside a Waverley Street soccer complex late Saturday after a game was targeted, but the motive behind the slaying remains unknown.
Mohamed Yusuf Abdullahi, 22, was shot multiple times in the parking lot of the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in south Winnipeg after a Canada African Cup of Nations match between teams made up of players originally from Eritrea and Ghana.
Abdullahi had just finished playing and was leaving the event when he was gunned down. Police do not believe it was a random shooting.
Erik Pindera reports.

'It’s time to move on'
Verde Plant Design is changing business models — transitioning to Winnipeg’s first candle bar — and moving from Osborne Village to a new space on Academy Road.
Co-owner Dominika Dratwa cited concerns about parking, crime and foot traffic for the move on the map, while an interest in candle-making led to the switch in concept.
Business reporter Gabrielle Piché talks to Dratwa about the move and what customers can expect to find when Verde Candle Bar opens in August.

'A place that Jane Jacobs would have been proud of'
Author and urban activist Jane Jacobs was an advocate for walkable, mixed-use neighbourhoods where apartments, houses, parks, schools and shops were all mixed together on pedestrian-friendly streetscapes.
Those ideals are reflected in Winnipeg’s CentrePlan 2050, writes Brent Bellamy.

'Kiss my grits'
The Bear has been a runaway hit with both audiences and critics since its debut two years ago; the hotly anticipated third season dropped on Disney+ late last month and has already been watched by millions.
The show is far from the first time a dining spot has played a starring role on a TV screen.
Dave Sanderson offers a rundown of other scripted eateries that have whetted the appetites of viewers.

'Zach’s got it all figured out'
During his time at the controls of the Blue Bombers offence, Zach Collaros has been a dominant force, piling up personal statistics to go along with a boatload of victories, including a pair of Grey Cups in 2020 and 2022.
That’s part of the reason his slow start to the 2024 CFL campaign was so surprising.
But dealing with some early-season adversity is something Collaros believes can help the team over the long run.
Ken Wiebe talks to Collaros and his teammates about responding to challenges in football and in life.

Catch up: Trump assassination attempt
The FBI is still trying to determine a motive behind Saturday’s attempt to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The shooting killed a former fire chief, wounded two other men and pierced the upper part of Trump’s ear with a bullet. The 20-year-old who authorities say carried out the attack is believed to have acted alone with his father’s gun.
Two days after the gunfire, the Republican National Convention began in Milwaukee. GOP delegates formally nominated Trump, making it official that he will lead the party in a third consecutive election. Trump announced Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his vice presidential running mate.
