The Wrap: Teen slain, Bowman’s a judge, endometriosis, Guess Who lawsuit and Pionk battles adversity

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'She just wanted a home'
A 14-year-old girl who was killed in a daylight stabbing in downtown Winnipeg Friday afternoon is being remembered as a precious child with unfulfilled potential.
The Indigenous teen spent part of her life in Manitoba’s child-welfare system, moving between foster homes in northern Manitoba and, recently, Winnipeg, a former foster mother told the Free Press.
Police are looking for a male suspect, believed to be an acquaintance, and two female witnesses who were with the teen.

'I am confident he will serve Manitobans well'
Former Winnipeg mayor Brian Bowman has been appointed to serve as a Manitoba Court of King’s Bench justice.
Legal experts say there is a longstanding precedent for politicians with legal experience to become judges — but the appointment was a surprise in some ways, since Bowman doesn’t appear to have practiced law in several years.

'Massively under-recognized and underappreciated'
Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that can cause cause debilitating, life-altering pain, as well as heavy bleeding, nausea, bloating, fatigue and infertility.
It affects an estimated one in 10 reproductive-age women worldwide — but despite how common it is, many women struggle to get a diagnosis or treatment.

'A complete farce'
Two former members of the Guess Who say a $20-million lawsuit launched in October by Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman is without merit and should be dismissed, according to a Dec. 15 filing at a Los Angeles courthouse.
The two most famous members of the Winnipeg rock band are suing former bandmates Jim Kale and Garry Peterson, claiming their advertising makes consumers think Bachman and Cummings are still in the band.
The court filing — the latest salvo in a decades-long battle for control of the Guess Who name — says it is well known that Bachman and Cummings are no longer part of the Guess Who and the band’s advertising does nothing to imply that they are part of the current lineup.

'If he keeps shooting, those pucks will go in'
Going into tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, Pionk is well on his way to a bounce-back campaign and that’s been a critical development for the Jets.
He’s back to playing with an edge and that’s usually when you know Pionk is feeling his best.
And when you consider everything he’s been dealing with off the ice, it makes Pionk’s resurgence even more impressive, writes Ken Wiebe.
