The Wrap: The Leaf closes, doctor sued, liquor at 7-Eleven and blackout law needs work

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

A Winnipeg man is flabbergasted after receiving an email from The Leaf that it closed when the temperature reached above 30 C Sunday.

Dr. Arcel Bissonnette, on trial accused of sexually assaulting five female patients, is now being sued by five other women who allege their complaints about the doctor to health authorities were ignored.

7-Eleven is planning to remodel its location at 3031 Ness Ave. and has applied for a liquor licence. Customers would be able to drink alcohol in the eating area. The chain has similar stores in Alberta and Ontario but this would be a first for Manitoba.

Premier Heather Stefanson and the Progressive Conservatives have been working overtime lately, pumping out good-news announcements at what might be a record pace before the fall election. Columnist Dan Lett would like to see the blackout law, which restricts the types of taxpayer-funded communications a government may perform, contain a definitive list of dos and don’ts, and some hefty financial penalties for breaches.
