The Wrap: Winnipegger wins bronze, teacher contract, local cheese awarded
Plus: a giant ice-cream heist in Carman

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'It feels amazing'

Winnipeg’s Skylar Park added to Canada’s medal haul in Paris today with a bronze medal in taekwondo.

The 25-year-old defeated Lebanon’s Laetitia Aoun 2-0 in the women’s 57-kilogram division.

Park credited her father, Jae, along with her brothers and sparring partners, Tae-Ku and Braven, for helping her reach the podium.

“We’ve always worked as one and as a team. It was a commitment that we all made and work that we all put in to achieve this. So this medal is won by Team Park, for sure,” she said.

'Manitoba teachers are now among the highest-paid in the country'

Manitoba’s first mega-contract for public school teachers will raise general wages by more than 12 per cent and establish a standardized salary scale for 2026-27.

By the end of the agreement, which combines 37 division-specific contracts and spans July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2026, the province’s most veteran and highly trained educators will earn upwards of $125,000, regardless of where they work.

Education reporter Maggie Macintosh looks at the history-making deal.

'There has to be something different'

Fabiola Della Pria wasn’t expecting too much when she attended an international cheese competition in Buffalo, N.Y., during the first week of July.

It had been less than two years since she launched Unique Brazilian Dairy, a home-based venture that markets cheeses and spreads based on recipes developed in her native Brazil — and this was the first time her fare would be judged on a world stage.

Imagine her surprise, then, when her Minas frescal cheese was awarded a silver medal in the American Cheese Society’s “fresh, unripened, all milks” category.

David Sanderson gives us a taste of her success.

'I scream, you scheme, we all want to find the ice cream!'

Police released surveillance video images of two hooded people who were described as suspects, as part of an appeal for tips to identify them and help solve the bizarre theft.

Chris Kitching has the scoop.
