18-year-old woman charged with assault with a weapon
A woman, thrust into the public spotlight last weekend when dozens of people gathered inside the Marlborough Hotel in response to a video showing staff binding her arms behind her back and preventing her from leaving the Smith Street hotel for allegedly attempting to stab an employee, has been charged with a similar assault two months earlier.

'Many foster parents are having to consider closing their home'
A Manitoba foster parent group is urging the NDP government to boost basic allowances and service fees, which have been frozen for more than a decade, or risk losing more caregivers to financial pressures.
The government-set rates haven’t kept up with cost-of-living increases and remain among the lowest in Canada, says the Manitoba Foster Parent Association.

Flying under the radar
When you’re not ranked Top 10 nationally, or don’t have a calendar filled with Grand Slam events, it can be easy to get overlooked as a curler in Manitoba.
Beth Peterson, who’s ranked 20th in the Canadian Team Ranking System and predominantly stuck to the Manitoba Curling Tour (MCT) this season, is the No. 4 seed at this week’s Manitoba women’s curling provincials.

'It’s been very difficult to find staff'
With around 3,700 restaurant and accommodation job vacancies last spring, a new program is hoping to draw new people to the industry.
The program, a collaboration between the Manitoba Métis Federation, Red River College Polytechnic, the Further Education Society and Bistro on Notre Dame aims to teach Métis youth culinary skills.
Me-yaw-sin Micowin, which means ‘good food,’ will accept 12 students to its free 12-week program.

'This one’s a special show for sure'
The Good Will Social Club marks the end of an era this weekend when it hosts Winterruption concerts for the final time.
The West End live-music venue, which has been a fixture on the city’s music scene since 2014, is closing in February.

In the end, goodwill went only so far. The Good Will Social Club marks the end of an era this weekend when it hosts Winterruption concerts for the final time.
