Good evening.

Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the Free Press sent reporter Melissa Martin to document how life had been upended in a country with deep ties to Manitoba.

The assignment left her in awe of both the land and its people. So much so, she returned — and spent the next 2½ years living in Kyiv.

Now, Melissa is back home in Winnipeg. Below, you’ll find her reflections on her final weeks overseas and her return to the Prairies — along with a roundup of other stories our newsroom has been working on today.
