Toews’ homecoming continues: Jets forward living out dream playing for hometown club

Mike McIntyre 7 minute read 6:03 PM CDT

Jonathan Toews wasn’t ready to say goodbye.

And so, even with his Winnipeg Jets experiencing plenty of turbulence this season, the thought of grabbing a parachute never crossed his mind as last week’s NHL trade deadline approached.

“No, no,” Toews told the Free Press on Thursday.

“Even if I was at the top of my game and things were clicking perfectly, I just don’t feel like that’s an opportunity or something I would see as an opportunity. I think the Jets have given me a huge chance to come back and play. I don’t want to turn my back on that for one second.”

TORONTO (AP) — Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews left Thursday night against Anaheim after a knee-on-knee hit from Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas.

Trying to make a move around Gudas in the slot in the second period of Toronto's 6-4 victory, Matthews stook a direct blow to his left leg and crashed to the ice. The U.S. Olympic captain stayed down before being helped to the locker room.

Gudas, the bruising Czech defender whose hit ended Canadian captain Sidney Crosby’s Olympics in the quarterfinals, was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct.

Matthews snapped a 12-game goal drought earlier in the period on a power play. The center has 27 goals and 26 assists in 60 games this season.

BOSTON (AP) — Colin Graf scored a short-handed goal and Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 38 shots on Thursday night to help the San Jose Sharks win 4-2 and hand the Bruins their first loss in Boston since Christmas.

Tyler Toffoli assisted on Michael Misa’s goal in the first period and was credited with their second when Macklin Celebrini’s shot bounced off Jeremy Swayman’s blocker, off Toffoli and into the net. Graf made it 3-0 at 3:13 of the third period when Alexander Wennberg led him through the neutral zone for the breakaway.

William Eklund gave the Sharks a 4-0 lead with 12 minutes left, batting his own rebound out of the air and past Swayman. Fraser Minten’s goal 10 seconds later spoiled Nedeljkovic’s shutout, and David Pastrnak cut the deficit to 4-2 with Swayman pulled for an extra skater in the final minute.

Swayman stopped 24 shots for Boston, which had won 13 straight at the TD Garden since their last loss on Dec. 23.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Jake Guentzel and Gage Goncalves each scored twice, Andrei Vasilevskiy made 23 saves and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Thursday night.

Tampa Bay won for just the third time in the past nine games since the Olympic break to move within two points of Buffalo for the Atlantic Division lead. Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov each had two assists.

J.T. Compher scored for the Red Wings, and John Gibson stopped 24 shots. Detroit has just one win the past five games (1-3-1), but remained in the No. 1 wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

Tampa Bay started the second period on a carryover power play and wasted little time taking advantage of it when Guentzel took a backhand pass from Kucherov and had a lane toward the net. Guentzel got to the middle of the zone and beat Gibson at 49 seconds.

TORONTO - William Nylander scored the go-ahead goal on a power play 36 seconds into the third period as the Maple Leafs came back from a 3-1 deficit to top the Anaheim Ducks 6-4 and snap an eight-game slide Thursday on a night that saw Toronto lose captain Auston Matthews to injury.

Matias Maccelli, with a goal and two assists, Matthews, John Tavares and Benoit-Olivier Groulx, against his former team, provided the rest of the offence for Toronto (28-27-11).

Matthew Knies chipped in three assists to go along with an empty-net goal. Nylander added two assists of his own for a three-point performance. Joseph Woll made 36 saves.

Matthews ended a 12-game goal drought — the second longest of his career — but took a knee-on-knee hit from Ducks defenceman Radko Gudas with four minutes left in the second period. The centre stayed down favouring his left leg before being helped to the locker room. Gudas was assessed a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct.

Trade deadline boost helps New York Islanders believe they can chase the Stanley Cup right now

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) — Matthew Schaefer magic already had the New York Islanders believing they could exceed preseason expectations and make the playoffs.

Acquiring Brayden Schenn at the NHL trade deadline after adding a couple of veteran depth players in January has only added to the good vibes around the team. First-year general manager Mathieu Darche “wanted to give a little push” by going out and getting Schenn, fellow Stanley Cup winner Ondrej Palat and depth defenseman Carson Soucy, and it might be the nudge the Islanders need to not just get in but go on a run.

“Mathieu, all he wanted was to reward the players,” coach Patrick Roy said Thursday. "The guys played so hard and played so well to give ourselves the best chance possible to make the playoffs. There’s no guarantee. You have to play the games. But I’m sure the players appreciate the moves that he made, and looking at the way we’ve been playing, I think our players deserve it as well.”

After missing the playoffs a year ago and winning the draft lottery to get the chance to select Schaefer with the top pick, the Islanders looked to be in rebuilding mode — not quite a contender but with the ingredients to get there.

NHL opts not to make Senators forfeit a 1st round pick for nullified 2021 trade

The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: 9:56 AM CDT

NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL has decided not to make the Ottawa Senators forfeit a first-round draft pick for their role in a 2021 trade that was later nullified.

The Senators instead will get the 32nd and final pick in the first round after the league decided their change of ownership affected what the appropriate punishment should be. The team will also pay a fine of 1 million dollars to NHL Foundation Canada.

If Ottawa misses the playoffs and happens to win the draft lottery for one of the first two picks, it will result in a re-draw. After announcing the alteration Thursday, the NHL said it will have no further comment on the matter.

“We fully accept the modified sanctions the league has imposed today," Senators owner Michael Andlauer said in a statement. "We are grateful for the league and commissioner keeping an open mind on this issue and modifying the penalty.

OTTAWA - Martin St. Louis may have tough decisions ahead.

The Montreal Canadiens coach raised eyebrows when he announced Jacob Fowler would start Wednesday against the Ottawa Senators.

The 21-year-old was instrumental, however, in Montreal's 3-2 victory with 32 saves.

After his recall from the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket, Fowler was in Ottawa ahead of his teammates Tuesday while Jakub Dobes made 17 saves in Montreal's 3-1 win over the Maple Leafs in Montreal.
