Lack of secondary scoring Jets’ biggest problem, says legendary coach

Mike McIntyre 7 minute read Yesterday at 5:20 PM CST

Bruce Boudreau has seen a lot of things over his professional hockey career. The stunning collapse of the Winnipeg Jets — from first to worst in the NHL standings in the blink of an eye — has the longtime player turned coach turned puck pundit completely perplexed.

“All options should be on the table,” he told the Free Press. “Keep trying everything until you find something that works.”

For now, status quo continues to be the play. The reigning Presidents’ Trophy winners, who are currently dead last in the league with 34 points (15-18-4), boarded their charter Tuesday with the same 23 players in tow. Nobody was placed on waivers. Nobody was called up from the Manitoba Moose. Nobody was traded.

This, despite dropping six consecutive games (0-3-3) and 19 of their last 25 overall (6-15-4) as they begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday night in Detroit. They’ll also play Thursday in Toronto and then wrap up Saturday in Ottawa.

Martone setting the tone for Canada ahead of NYE clash win Finland at world juniors

Joshua Clipperton, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Yesterday at 4:09 PM CST

MINNEAPOLIS - Porter Martone stood up and faced the music.

The Canadian captain at the world junior hockey championship was issued a warning by a disciplinary committee for crossing the red line in warm-ups ahead of a feisty opening-night rematch against Czechia — the team that eliminated his country at the quarterfinal stage of the last two tournaments.

Martone then took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after sealing a 7-5 victory with an empty-net goal. Hockey Canada was also subsequently forced to apologize when the team didn't take part in the post-anthem handshake line.

The 19 year-old from Peterborough, Ont., took full responsibility and promised to be better.

The 19-year-old, from North Vancouver, B.C., was among 19 players named to Canada's finalized 25-player men’s hockey roster Wednesday ahead of the NHL's return to the Games.

Celebrini, who sits third in league scoring behind superstar countrymen Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers and Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche, is one of six additions to the group that won the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament last February.

Joining the San Jose Sharks centre as newcomers up front are Nick Suzuki of the Montreal Canadiens, Bo Horvat of the New York Islanders and Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals.

‘I wish I had an answer’: Home ice woes haunt struggling Vancouver Canucks

Gemma Karstens-Smith, The Canadian Press 4 minute read 4:00 AM CST

VANCOUVER - Most NHL teams would be excited for an upcoming homestand.

That may not be the case for the Vancouver Canucks.

The team has struggled mightily at Rogers Arena this season, falling to 4-12-1 at home with an ugly 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. They've now lost four straight games in their own building.

With 10 home matchups in January, the Canucks (16-20-3) are searching for solutions.

TORONTO - Joseph Woll made 33 saves for his first shutout of the season, while Bobby McMann, Nicolas Roy, Calle Jarnkrok and Matthew Knies scored as the injury-riddled Toronto Maple Leafs blanked the New Jersey Devils 4-0 on Tuesday.

Playing their third game in four nights since the Christmas break, the Maple Leafs were without William Nylander (lower-body injury) for a second straight game, Auston Matthews (lower body), Chris Tanev (lower body) and Dakota Joshua, who remained in Detroit after suffering a kidney injury against the Red Wings on Sunday.

McMann scored on the power play late in the first period, and Roy added a redirect goal just as another man-advantage situation had expired. McMann tipped the puck to Roy. Nicholas Robertson helped set up both goals.

Jarnkrok scored in the third period for his first goal since Nov. 1. Knies added an empty-netter.

Drastic course correction led Canada’s Keaton Verhoeff to world juniors

Joshua Clipperton, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Yesterday at 5:03 PM CST

MINNEAPOLIS - Braeden Cootes remembers a very different Keaton Verhoeff.

The pair from just outside Edmonton crossed paths at rinks growing up. Cootes was a forward. Verhoeff suited up as a goaltender.

Their careers would take off and both are now living a dream playing for Canada at the world junior hockey championship. Cootes remains a forward. Verhoeff, however, drastically changed course.

The Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., product hung up his pads, blocker and glove at age 12, shifting from puck-stopper to puck-moving defenceman.

Sceptres left looking for adjustments after being unable to solve Nicole Hensley

Abdulhamid Ibrahim, The Canadian Press 4 minute read 4:00 AM CST

TORONTO - The Toronto Sceptres tilted the ice for much of the final two periods, but just could not figure out Nicole Hensley.

The Minnesota Frost goaltender put on a clinic in her 31-save outing to lead her Professional Women's Hockey League team to a 5-1 victory over Toronto on Tuesday. On the other hand, Sceptres starter Elaine Chuli, who suffered her first loss of the season, was chased after giving up four goals on 18 shots in two periods.

"Never an easy decision to make," Toronto head coach Troy Ryan said. " … To me I think it's probably more a combination of shake up the team but I think there's at least two goals that she would like to have back.

"And we need our goalie to make those saves when we're not putting the puck in the net. We need to keep it close. She knows that. She acknowledged that after the game. … It doesn't means she's a bad goaltender. She's a great goaltender."

TORONTO - The odds were stacked against the Toronto Maple Leafs, who on Tuesday were playing their third game in four nights since the Christmas break and were without key injured players Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Chris Tanev.

But the Maple Leafs hunkered down and benefited from a superb performance from netminder Joseph Woll in the 4-0 victory against the New Jersey Devils before 18,923 at Scotiabank Arena.

Woll made 33 saves to earn his first shutout of the season and first regular-season shutout in more than 13 months.

“He was unreal for us,” said Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies, who scored an empty-netter in the third period after Bobby McMann and Nicolas Roy had the home squad ahead 2-0 after 40 minutes. Calle Jarnkrok scored in the third period.

Tocchet, who walked away from the same position with the Canucks in late April, was recognized on the big screen midway through the first period and was met by both boisterous boos and a smattering of cheers.

NHL roundup: Suzuki scores in OT as Canadiens rally to stun Panthers 3-2

The Associated Press 5 minute read Updated: 1:26 AM CST

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Nick Suzuki got a power-play goal 3:24 into overtime, and the Montreal Canadiens rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final five minutes of regulation to stun the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Suzuki also scored late in regulation to tie the game for the Canadiens, who improved to 6-1-3 in their last 10 games. Cole Caufield also scored for Montreal.

Brad Marchand and Sam Reinhart scored for Florida, but Marchand was called for roughing 1:27 into overtime — giving Montreal a 4-on-3 advantage.

The Panthers paid tribute to Marchand’s 1,000th career point in a pre-game ceremony. Marchand got the milestone point in mid-November, but chose this game — against Montreal, one of his longtime rivals when he was with Boston and a team coached by one of his idols, Martin St. Louis — for the formal celebration.
