Eva Wasney is an award-winning journalist who approaches every story with curiosity and care.
Born in Winnipeg, she is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg and Red River College Polytech’s creative communications program.
She worked as a staff reporter and photographer with the Brandon Sun and Free Press Community Review prior to joining the Free Press’s Arts & Life department in 2019. Since then, she has written for nearly every section of paper, contributed to the editorial board and pulled shifts on the copy-editing desk. Eva is the co-author of Dish, the Free Press’s bi-weekly food and drink newsletter.
In 2022, she wrote and compiled a community cookbook, entitled Homemade: Recipes and Stories from Winnipeg and Beyond, to mark the newspaper’s 150th anniversary and its long history of food journalism. The project received more than 400 recipe submissions, became a local bestseller and received a global cookbook award.
Eva was named a National Newspaper Award finalist for her profile of local Anishnaabe artist Jordan Stranger and his campaign against corporate “orange-washing.” While at the Brandon Sun, she won an EPPY Award for a large multimedia project about Second World War veterans.
Eva has a passion for publishing nuanced stories big and small about food, music, culture and creativity in its many forms. She also has a soft spot for a good animal story.
