Winnipeg’s most iconic sports fan will soon add another honour to his expansive awards list.

Gabriel (Dancing Gabe) Langlois will receive an honorary diploma in community development from Red River College at its winter 2021 convocation ceremony Feb. 23.

Dancing Gabe has become a household name in Winnipeg amidst more than 35 years of sporting event appearances, volunteering, and work with the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg. His impressive list of accolades includes the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and Winnipeg’s Community Service Award.

Even so, Gabe said his first honorary degree was “an honour.”

“It made my day,” he told the Free Press on Thursday. “It made my late mom and dad proud, too.”

His sister, Claudette Langlois, said the award couldn’t go to a better person.

“I’m very proud of him,” she said. “Even just to go down to Red River and get the pictures taken and everything, he’s pretty happy, so it’s been really nice.”

The decision by a nominating committee and the RRC board of governors was an easy one, RRC president and chief executive officer Fred Meier said, calling Gabe “one of our most well-known and beloved Manitobans.”

“If you look at the honorary diploma that he is receiving in community development, it really embodies what that program is trying to accomplish… It’s about building communities and embedding community spirit in what we do, bringing people together,” Meier said. “He really does live those values.”

Gabe’s sister agrees: “He’s been volunteering for years, he’s volunteered for everything. A lot of people know him in the city, and we live in a great city to acknowledge what he’s done.”

It was a spot of good news in what has been a tough year for the sports fanatic. Gabe groaned when asked how he’s taken the last year without live sports in the city due the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s felt disappointing, I guess. It’s felt disappointing… but I just went to my first Jets game last Saturday against the Ottawa Senators,” he said.

His voice then took on a more cheerful tone. “I danced with (mascot) Mick E. Moose.”

The most recent recipient of an RRC honorary degree (Indigenous social enterprise) was advocate/elder Mae Louise Campbell, at the Winnipeg school’s fall 2020 convocation.

Psychologist sentenced to house arrest after affair with patient

Dean Pritchard 5 minute read Updated: 5:31 PM CDT

A psychologist who didn’t disclose her sexual affair with a mental-health patient under her care when she testified on his behalf before the Criminal Code Review Board has been sentenced to 18 months house arrest.

“The offence represents a significant affront to the administration of justice,” provincial court Judge Kusham Sharma said at a sentencing hearing for woman earlier this week.

A court-order bars the publication of details that could identify those involved in the case, after the patient pleaded guilty in 2024 to criminally harassing the psychologist’s husband. The patient has anti-social and borderline personality disorders with psychopathic traits.

Sharma convicted the woman last March of one count each of breach of trust by a public official and attempting to obstruct justice.

‘Disrespectful’: residents frustrated after Wyatt arrives hour late to committee meeting

Several Winnipeggers attending a city development hearing on Thursday expressed frustration that one councillor arrived about an hour late, delaying the matter from being heard.

Coun. Russ Wyatt, who continues to attend city hall while facing criminal charges, began participating in the 9:30 a.m. East Kildonan-Transcona community committee meeting at 10:35 a.m.

A resident who hoped to speak at the meeting about a development plan in south Transcona noted the tardiness led the committee to bump the topic down on its agenda, while dozens waited to speak on it.

Christina Pyra eventually opted to leave city hall instead of waiting for her turn to make a presentation, to avoid missing a work commitment.

Bringing home a Fish: Group of local baseball fans open doors to Goldeyes

Mike McIntyre 7 minute read Yesterday at 6:25 PM CDT

There’s no place like home.

But what exactly does that mean for members of the Winnipeg Goldeyes, who typically find themselves hundreds or even thousands of miles away from family and friends between May and September, trying to keep their baseball careers alive while living on shoestring budgets?

For some, home is a modest downtown hotel room or small apartment typically shared with a teammate or two. For others, there’s a more personal touch — one that truly connects them to the community they happen to be playing in.

Welcome to the world of billets, a longstanding tradition in this market that dates back to when the Fish first took flight back in 1994. They are a unique and valuable tool for the American Association organization and its players, with a dedicated group of local baseball fans who open their doors and roll out the welcome mat year after year.

‘Much more to do’ to meet demand for licensed child care: education minister

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read 5:49 PM CDT

An Elmwood child-care facility with 1,000 kids on its wait list served as the backdrop for a government news conference touting recent steps taken to meet overwhelming demand for licensed spaces in Manitoba.

“Much accomplished, much more to do — but we’re on the right track,” Education Minister Tracy Schmidt told reporters during a morning event at the Munroe Early Childhood Education Centre on Thursday.

The centre, which operates two preschool sites in northeast Winnipeg, recently underwent renovations to accommodate 48 more children at its Thames Avenue location.

Those additions are among 1,075 funded spaces that have opened across Manitoba since late last year.
