20th annual VIBE awards put spotlight on giving back

As a student at the University of Manitoba, Terry Brown never thought that one day he might be the leader of an award-winning company.

“I was just trying to find my own way,” he said.

More than two decades later, the company Brown co-founded, Okimaw Community & HR Solutions, will be honoured next month in Winnipeg at the 20th annual Visionary Indigenous Business Excellence Awards.

The awards are presented by Indigenous Business Education Partners, which offers tutoring, mentoring and financial aid and more to Indigenous students pursuing a degree at the U of M’s Asper School of Business.

The Whiteout continues this year, with Winnipeggers wearing white when the Jets are in the playoffs.

On game days, fans gather for a street party on Donald Street, organized by True North Sports and Entertainment, the corporation that owns the NHL franchise and Canada Life Centre.

The 5,000-person event requires a $10 entry fee and features drinks, food vendors and three massive screens for fans to watch the game broadcast.

The tradition began in 1987 when the Jets faced the Calgary Flames in the playoffs. When  Flames fans created a "C of red" for the first two games of the series in Cowtown, Winnipeggers responded by wearing white to games at Winnipeg Arena to match the colour of the Jets’ jerseys.

Former Oilers teammates square off for first time

Calvin Pickard has been many things to Stuart Skinner.

An ally, sounding board, confidante and most importantly, a close friend.

They were a goalie tandem for parts of three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, making two trips to the Stanley Cup final, combining for 29 playoff wins, but falling just short of achieving the ultimate goal on both of those occasions.

They were opponents just once last season when the Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins met for the first time since the trade that shipped Skinner to Pennsylvania, but it was Tristan Jarry – the guy he was traded for – standing at the opposite side of the rink.

Derek King typically has ice in his veins.

But the Manitoban admits there may be a few more butterflies than usual as he prepares for the ultimate home game — the 2026 Heritage Classic between the Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens.

“This is so exciting to be back,” King, the NHL’s vice-president of hockey operations and facilities operations, said Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s definitely going to be a fun event to be part of.”
