There’s a new beacon for local art in the Exchange District.

Co-owned by Laura Porath and Mike Page, Lucent Gallery + Design Studio, which celebrates its grand opening Thursday at 102-52 Albert St., is both a gallery representing Winnipeg artists and a design studio focused on residential and commercial spaces.

“Lucent” means “to glow,” which was meaningful to them in many ways, Porath says.

Mike Page and Laura Porath have opened Lucent Gallery + Design Studio after racking up years of experience in their fields. Porath is a practising artist, while Page has experience in architecture and interior design.

“It’s how we feel about art and design, about shining a light on the incredible artists that we represent, how we feel about the Exchange District and Winnipeg, and how we feel about each other and starting a business together.”

Porath and Page have been a couple for 21 years and have two children together, as well as a small, sleepy 15-year-old schnauzer/poodle mix named Olive who is snoozing in the back office of the bright new space as they chat with a reporter.

They’ve racked up years of experience in their respective fields independently; Porath, who is also a practising artist, has worked in commercial galleries for more than 15 years, while Page has more than 20 years of experience working in architecture and interior design. The time was right to combine their skills and build something together.

Both sides of the business complement each other, Porath says.

“We see art and design working together in harmony. If you are looking for art did you know we also do design? Or, if you’re looking for design did you know we also represent many fantastic local artists? We hope the two businesses under one roof will work together.”

The gallery currently has 12 contemporary Winnipeg artists — including Sue Gordon, Lawren Rich, Mohan Tenuwara and more – on its roster whose works are on view in the Page-designed gallery, which has space for future solo exhibitions.

Lucent Gallery + Design Studio has its grand opening Thursday.

“There’s a tremendous amount of talent in Winnipeg, and there’s a lot of artists who don’t have representation,” Porath says. “If you’re curious about art or interested in art, here’s a place where you can discover them.”

Lucent joins a network of Exchange District galleries, which Porath and Page see as a more-the-merrier opportunity.

“We love the Exchange District and having more galleries in this area encourages more people to come down and get a coffee and do the gallery circuit,” says Porath, who also served on the board of First Fridays in the Exchange for a decade. “We’re all good for each other. We belong together in a community here, which is really nice.”

Opening a gallery in 52 Albert St. is also a full-circle moment for Porath, who spent much of her youth training in karate on the third floor of the building in the 1980s and ’90s. (She also worked at galleries on the stretch, including the former Fleet Gallery and Soul Gallery, and her sculpture studio is on the street as well.)

“I just feel like I’m meant to be on Albert Street.”

Police probe weekend vandalism spree as dozens of school buses taken out of service

Chris Kitching 5 minute read Updated: 4:57 PM CDT

Vandals used fire extinguishers to damage dozens of Winnipeg School Division buses and an elementary school in a pair of weekend break-ins, disrupting transportation or lessons for potentially hundreds of students.

Several buses were taken out of service, resulting in cancellations or delays on some routes Monday, after 45 parked vehicles were damaged in a lot on Selkirk Avenue, west of Keewatin Street.

“We occasionally will have a fire extinguisher stolen or a little bit of damage, but this was certainly the largest-scale vandalism that we’ve seen in our (transportation) yard,” said Matt Henderson, superintendent of Manitoba’s largest school division.

“The result of that was a number of bus routes had to be cancelled (Monday), which is really problematic. There’s an added stress on families to get their children to school.”

Winnipeg put on a great event with Heritage Classic, Jets can’t hold up their end of the bargain

Mike McIntyre 7 minute read Updated: 7:36 AM CDT

The Winnipeg Jets know how to throw a great outdoor party. Unfortunately for the club, they haven’t perfected the all-important hockey portion of the Heritage Classic.

A 2-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday night inside Princess Auto Stadium comes 10 years after a 3-0 downer against the Edmonton Oilers inside the same football facility.

Better luck in 2036, perhaps?

Hey, at least the Jets finally found a way to score a goal in this one as Isak Rosen broke Jacob Fowler’s shutout bid with just under five minutes left in regulation. But they were ultimately unable to finish off a memorable weekend with a much-needed win in front of a raucous, sold-out crowd of 32,343.

Man stabbed outside shelter dies days later, manslaughter charges laid

Scott Billeck 4 minute read Updated: 4:24 PM CDT

A violent altercation outside Winnipeg’s largest homeless shelter turned fatal days later, leaving staff and community members mourning the loss of a man who was well known to them.

Police were called to Siloam Mission around 10:30 a.m. Saturday Oct. 17 after a fight broke out in the shelter’s parking lot on the 300 block of Stanley Street, leaving a 31-year-old man with stab wounds.

Officers found the man in critical condition and rushed him to hospital, where he remained until his death on Tuesday Oct. 20.

On Monday, police identified the victim as Jereth Joseph James Clarke, a member of Norway House Cree Nation who had been staying in Winnipeg.

Trump says he expects trade war with Canada to end ‘pretty soon’

The Canadian Press 3 minute read Updated: 4:07 PM CDT

OTTAWA - U.S. President Donald Trump says he expects his constantly evolving trade war with Canada to end "pretty soon" as Prime Minister Mark Carney suggests Washington could be moving closer to Ottawa's demands.

Trump told a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday that Canada had been "ripping off" the U.S. on trade and he had no choice but to impose levies on Canadian goods.

He said the trade dispute would be settled "pretty soon" and that Canada was "willing to give us anything at this moment."

At a news conference Monday, Carney was asked if there had been any movement on the trade file in the past week.

Connor Hellebuyck breaks silence after trade from Jets

Mike McIntyre 8 minute read Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026

It took until the very end of his introductory news conference Saturday — right around the 15-minute mark — before Connor Hellebuyck was finally asked the question that hockey fans back in Winnipeg were likely waiting for.

“Is there anything you’d like to say to Jets fans?” a reporter who covers Hellebuyck’s new team, the New Jersey Devils, put to him during the session held inside the Prudential Center in Newark.

A short pause followed.

“I mean, there’s a lot. There’s a lot that I need to say,” Hellebuyck began, no doubt raising plenty of eyebrows around here and the hockey world in general.

Backup QB leads offensive outburst to secure playoff spot for Bombers

Taylor Allen 7 minute read Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026

Don’t let the final score fool you.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers clinched a playoff berth with a 34-10 victory over the B.C. Lions on Friday night in Vancouver, but it was anything but pretty.

Had they not been facing a lineup loaded with second- and third-stringers, the Bombers might be preparing for the off-season instead of another game right now.

Luckily for them, they survived three horrendous quarters to prevail. A loss would have ended their season and handed a playoff spot to the Calgary Stampeders instead.
