A prairie boy at heart, Matthew was raised in Winnipeg on the Saturday edition of the Free Press. Each weekend he would race to the door, snag the paper and flip through the pages to the prized funnies. But once in a while, he would stop and glance at the front-page stories, briefly reading the articles before resuming his search for comics.

Matthew got his journalism start at the Free Press as an eager intern in December 2023, and he completed two further summer internships in 2024 and 2025.  He was recognized as the 2025 Student Journalist of the Year by J-Schools Canada/Écoles-J Canada.

After graduating from the Creative Communications program at Red River Polytechnic, Matthew joined The Carillon, a weekly newspaper in southeastern Manitoba. He swapped his dress shoes for work boots while covering rural communities, traipsing through muddy fields and driving hundreds of kilometres in blizzards for scoops.

His shoe-leather reporting on Provincial Court, school boards and municipal politics earned him a job as a Toronto-based national reporter for The Globe and Mail in May 2026.

Matthew rejoined the Free Press in September 2026 and claimed the same, relatively untouched desk from his internships.

He has swapped his Saturday-edition comics habit for crosswords.
