Tyler Searle’s childhood dream was to get paid to write. As luck would have it, he found a place at the Winnipeg Free Press, which has likely published more words in the last century than any paper in Western Canada.
His first byline appeared in his hometown paper, the Dauphin Herald, when he was 16 years old.
After a summer covering local affairs — the highlight of which involved sifting through wreckage left behind by Dauphin’s Countryfest — he moved to Winnipeg and found work as a hairstylist.
When salons closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he returned to ink and paper, enrolling in Red River College Polytechnic’s creative communications program as a journalism major.
He wrote for the Stonewall Teulon Tribune, Selkirk Record and Express Weekly News before joining the Winnipeg Free Press as a web editor. He now reports for the city desk, covering everything from fundraisers to fires.
In his spare time, he likes to read, write and practise jiu-jitsu. His favourite authors include Stephen King, Haruki Murakami and Chuck Palahniuk.
