Several events in Winnipeg marked the annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Tuesday.

More than 100 people gathered at 621 Academy Rd., on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, for a ceremony unveiling three plaques near the former school.

The plaques are written in Anishinaabemowin, Anishininimowin, Cree, Dakota, Dene, English and French — reflecting the languages spoken by children who attended the school.

Thousands also gathered for a a morning pipe ceremony and march from Oodena Circle at The Forks to the RBC Convention Centre.

While Sept. 30 was first recognized as a statutory holiday last year, it has been known as Orange Shirt Day since 2013. Residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad had an orange shirt, given to her by her grandmother, but it was taken away when she arrived at the school.
