Commercial real estate adviser Avison Young is marketing for sale or lease one of the last available developments in southeast Winnipeg.

The proposed development, called Dawson Crossing, will include up to 3,000 residential units and is designed to accommodate retailers of every scale, the company announced in a news release.

The 119-acre piece of land fronts onto Fermor Avenue and is adjacent to Sage Creek. It will include approximately 55 acres of commercial development, plus 44 acres that will be a mix between commercial mixed-use and multifamily residential. The development also includes 12 acres of parkland.

Dawson Crossing will accommodate 250,000 square feet of retail capacity for large anchor parcels and street-facing storefronts in an area where more than 65,000 vehicles pass through daily, according to the release.

Approvals and zoning are in place and heavy equipment has moved on to the site to begin servicing, Todd Labelle, vice-president at Avison Young, told the Free Press. Full site work and servicing is expected to be completed by fall 2027.

Avison Young has received “quite a bit of interest” since announcing the development two weeks ago, Labelle said.

“As soon as we went live for the launch, I managed to tie up 14 acres of the multifamily land,” he said. “We’re starting to see there’s interest with it being the gateway in and out of northwestern Ontario and cottage country.”

The site will be ready for construction in October, and a few groups are looking at getting started in spring 2027, he added.

The current owner is a local developer going under the name Dawson Crossing Developments that acquired the property around 20 years ago, said Labelle, who has been working with the developer for the last eight years.

Labelle said the timing is right, given the city’s shortages. “This site is going to allow us to have 2,000 to 3,000 housing units, so that’s going to help us tackle some of the housing needs in Winnipeg.”

In addition to grocery chains, gas stations and banks, Avison Young has been in discussion with medical clinics and groups interested in building housing for seniors, Labelle said.

Inflation-battered U.S. voters could prove to be key Canadian ally in fight against Trump’s trade tyranny

Dan Lett 5 minute read Yesterday at 1:37 PM CDT

Is there anything or anyone that can help Canada and the United States avoid an unprecedented trade war?

Both nations stand poised on the precipice of a tariff battle that could — in the worst-case scenario — trigger an economic downturn. Both countries have a lot to lose, but neither country is showing any sign of backing down.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has, by all accounts, given negotiation a full chance to defuse the trade war. It didn’t work and it appears now that nothing — neither thoughtful negotiation or retaliatory measures — will dissuade U.S. President Donald Trump from his war of trade attrition.

Increasingly, it appears that if Trump is going to back away from punitive tariffs against Canada, it will be because of mounting pressure from within the United States and not because of tough talk and countermeasures from this side of the border.

A bad trade deal in virtually all ways

You can’t fix stupid.

And you can’t sign a contract — or a trade deal — with a proven liar, cheat and blackmailer.

And sometimes, you end up having to fight.

Yes, we are referring to U.S. President Donald Trump, a politician who obviously confuses might with bright.

The health of water

Dimple Roy 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

As World Water Week kicks off, I have been greatly heartened to discover that, right here in Manitoba and even across Canada, there’s a broad consensus that we need more — and better — solutions to the water crises we’re currently facing.

According to a new poll, nearly 73 per cent of Canadians believe improving water infrastructure is an urgent priority.

Unfortunately, this sense of urgency is clearly born from that fact that around two-thirds of Canadians have experienced water-related issues in the past five years. Here in the Prairies, the story is even more bleak, with one in three reporting experiences with water main breaks, nearly double the national average.

More than half of Canadians believe these problems are becoming more frequent — likely due in no small part to the ever-intensifying impacts of climate change.

Despite complaints from thousands of dissatisfied users, Winnipeg hasn't hit the brakes on the rollout of its new primary transit network. And it appears that ignoring the public response cost Winnipeg Transit millions of dollars in lost revenue and ridership.

Pretty, purple and pernicious plants plaguing Prairies

Tiago Resko 3 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

After noticing mysterious purple flowers popping up in little patches around the Wolseley neighbourhood last summer, Vic Penner didn’t give it too much thought.

However, this summer, the deceivingly beautiful flowers were impossible to ignore.

“They were just everywhere,” said Penner, 37.

Wolseley isn’t the only neighbourhood being overrun by the plant.
