Reader Bridge Media Literacy Project

What happens when a mistake is made?

Reporters, editors and photographers are human, and they all make mistakes sometimes. Whether it’s a misspelled name, an incorrect date or fact, a typo, a misheard quote or any other error, the Free Press takes mistakes seriously.

If a factual error was in the print newspaper, you will see a “correction notice” on page A2 of the next day’s paper, which states what the error was and what the correct information is. Typos that don’t impact the reader’s understanding of the story (such as a mistaken extra letter in a word or incorrect punctuation), are fixed in the digital version of the story and do not require a correction notice in print.

Any error that has been fixed in an online story is shown in a correction notice at the bottom of the story. You can scroll down to the bottom of any online story to see exactly what changes have been made and when.

If you spot an error, you can report it online by using the “report an error” button at the bottom of the story or by emailing our web team at webnews@freepress.mb.ca.
