The Carillon Reporter – Full Time

Job Description

As a reporter, you will play a key role in providing content for our newspaper and website, covering the stories that matter in the community. You will be responsible for generating stories and accompanying photos for a wide variety of news stories. Beat coverage will include municipal politics, court and school divisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pursue vigorously all daily and longer-term reporting assignments received from the supervising editor
  • Initiate and develop ideas for story assignments in conjunction with the supervising editor
  • Write clear, concise, reader-friendly stories as per reporting assignments
  • Ensure all stories meet high standards of accuracy, fairness and comprehensiveness
  • Meet assignment deadlines
  • Take direction and assist colleagues as required
  • Maintain close contact with the community in person and via social media
  • Remain current on local issues and apply knowledge of provincial and federal issues to our publication with a local perspective

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in the media and a post-secondary degree in journalism or at least two years of relevant experience in print, online and/or broadcast journalism
  • Strong photography skills and ability to learn
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and work effectively under deadline pressure
  • Excellent research, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, passionate about journalism storytelling
  • Experience and proven ability in writing to conform to Canadian Press style and standard Canadian English, grammar, spelling and capitalization
  • Ability to work different shifts including evenings and weekends
  • Familiarity with rural communities an asset
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and independently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
