A relaxed Rory McIlroy says he’s more motivated than ever after Masters repeat

Steve Reed, The Associated Press 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:11 PM CDT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rory McIlroy appeared rested and relaxed as he prepared for his first tournament since repeating as Masters champion.

Just don't let that be confused with complacency.

The world's No. 2-ranked player said he feels “more motivated" than ever heading into a major stretch that includes the PGA Championship next week outside of Philadelphia and the U.S. Open next month at Shinnecock Hills. First up though is this week's Truist Championship at Quail Hollow, where McIlroy earned his first PGA Tour victory 16 years ago and has won four times.

“I'm excited for the road ahead,” the six-time major champion said Wednesday after his Pro-Am round.

Wichita State abruptly shuts down men’s and women’s golf, citing financial strain

The Associated Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 1:07 PM CDT

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita State is shuttering its men's and women's golf programs, effective immediately, the school announced on Tuesday.

“Today marks a difficult moment for our department. This decision was not made lightly and reflects deep and deliberate consideration,” director of athletics Kevin Saal said in a statement.

The university cited long-term financial sustainability as the driving factor behind the changes, referring to the modern college athletics landscape as “increasingly complex and costly.”

The women's golf program, led by Tom McCurdy, finished the season in the American Conference Championship in late April, where the Shockers placed eighth.

LIV Golf had a blank canvas. The PGA Tour could use one as it tries to solve a packed schedule

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 6 minute read Tuesday, May. 5, 2026

LIV Golf had a seemingly endless supply of Saudi money that suddenly is coming to an end. Overlooked is another of its assets — this one with no price tag — the PGA Tour would love to have.

A blank canvas.

Even as LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil was trying to present hope for a future without the financial muscle of Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the PGA Tour was moving from one signature event to another on the short road to Aronimink for the PGA Championship.

It's a schedule that doesn't make sense.

Tiger Woods officially out of PGA Championship. The surprise was an invitation for Dustin Johnson

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 4 minute read Tuesday, May. 5, 2026

Tiger Woods is officially out of the PGA Championship. Ditto for Phil Mickelson, who has played only one LIV Golf event this year as he copes with a family health matter and withdrew shortly after the list of 154 players was announced Tuesday for Aronimink Golf Club.

And the big surprise was Dustin Johnson, who was extended one of the special invitations to the PGA Championship next week despite his eligibility running out last year.

“Very excited,” Johnson said from LIV Golf Virginia, “I want to play in all the majors. I feel like my game is still good enough to compete with everyone and still can win. The PGA was nice enough to give me an invitation. So yeah, I'm very, very happy and thankful for that.”

The PGA of America held back two spots in case the winners of two PGA Tour events, the Truist Championship and the Myrtle Beach Classic, are not already eligible.

Jon Rahm resolves his dispute with European tour as LIV Golf faces loss of Saudi funding

Ben Nuckols, The Associated Press 5 minute read Tuesday, May. 5, 2026

STERLING, Va. (AP) — Jon Rahm has resolved his financial dispute with the European tour, a move that potentially gives him a place to compete in 2027 and beyond with LIV Golf facing an uncertain future.

Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton took questions Tuesday at LIV Golf Virginia after LIV CEO Scott O'Neil spoke to reporters about his efforts to court investors for a league that is losing its chief financial backer, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, at the end of the season.

Both players declined to speculate on their future and noted that they remain under contract with LIV for years to come.

“As of right now I have several years on my contract left, and I’m pretty sure they did a pretty good job when they drafted that, so I don’t see many ways out,” Rahm said.

PGA Tour winter schedule for 2027 looks like this year. The mystery is Florida

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 8 minute read Tuesday, May. 5, 2026

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is the latest PGA Tour event to announce its dates for a 2027 season that is looking to be similar to this year, minus Hawaii.

The American Express in La Quinta, California, is set for the third full week in January again. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (Feb. 4-7) and WM Phoenix Open (Feb. 11-14, the week of the Super Bowl) already have announced dates on their websites.

The Masters, around which the early season revolves, is April 8-11, and again will be followed by the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town and the Zurich Classic.

The mystery remains Florida, except for The Players Championship set for March 11-14. Adding to the intrigue was the return of Doral to the schedule, which looked nothing like the Doral of old except for all the water on the course and airliners descending on nearby Miami International Airport.

Cameron Young at Doral and Nelly Korda in Mexico deliver dominant wins

Cameron Young at Doral and Nelly Korda in Mexico deliver dominant wins

The Associated Press 5 minute read Sunday, May. 3, 2026

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — Cameron Young called a one-shot penalty on himself for his ball slightly moving in the second fairway and he still made par. It was that kind of week for Young, who closed with a 4-under 68 for a six-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler in the Cadillac Championship.

Young became the first wire-to-wire winner at Doral since Andy Bean in 1977, opening with a 64 on the Blue Monster and never giving anyone much of a chance, including the world's No. 1 player.

He finished at 19-under 269 with President Donald Trump, who owns Trump National Doral, watching and giving the rising American star a thumbs-up and later a handshake.

Young now has three wins since last August, including The Players Championship. Scheffler, who closed with a 68, was a runner-up for the third straight time dating to the Masters. Scheffler has earned $6.,75 million for those three tournaments.

Stewart Cink adds another senior major with a 3-shot win at Regions Tradition

The Associated Press 3 minute read Sunday, May. 3, 2026

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Stewart Cink pulled away with consecutive birdies early on the back nine Sunday that stretched his lead to four shots, and he closed with a 3-under 69 for a three-shot victory in the Regions Tradition for his second major this year on the PGA Tour Champions.

Cink, who won the Senior PGA Championship two weeks ago in Florida, became the second player in two years to capture the first two majors on the 50-and-older circuit. Angel Cabrera won the Senior PGA and the Tradition last year in consecutive weeks.

“This weekend was a little scrappy,” Cink said. “I'm really proud I was able to stay out front.”

He was staked to a three-shot lead going into the final round at Greystone Golf & Country Club, and Colin Montgomerie got within two shots of them heading to the back nine.

With Trump watching in Doral, Cameron Young finishes off wire-to-wire win at Cadillac Championship

Tim Reynolds, The Associated Press 5 minute read Sunday, May. 3, 2026

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — The only person who gave Cameron Young any trouble on Sunday was, well, Cameron Young.

He called a one-stroke penalty on himself while playing the par-4 second hole, after he caused his ball to move in the fairway. And then he made par anyway.

It was that sort of week: Young was unflappable and unbeatable. He went wire-to-wire alone on the lead at the Cadillac Championship, a final round of 4-under 68 getting him to 19 under for the week and six shots clear of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (68).

“When the golf course is difficult, when the conditions are difficult, that tends to make it easier for me mentally,” Young said.

Nelly Korda crushes another LPGA field and wins by 4 shots in Mexico

The Associated Press 4 minute read Sunday, May. 3, 2026

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) — Nelly Korda delivered an early knockout punch Sunday and stretched her lead to as many as seven shots before cruising to the finish line with a 3-under 69 and a four-shot victory in the Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba for her third win of the young season.

One week after Korda crushed the field at The Chevron Championship for her third career major, she left everyone feeling hopeless at El Camaleon with precision that carried the No. 1 player in women's golf to another dominant victory.

Korda went 60 consecutive holes without a bogey, a streak that ended when it no longer mattered.

She had a six-shot lead playing the 18th when she sent her drive to the right and deep into the tropical bushes, never finding the golf ball. She hit a provisional into a bunker, the next one into the gallery and finished by making a 20-foot putt for bogey, only her second of the tournament.

Nelly Korda taps in for eagle and a 67 to build a three-shot lead in Mexico

The Associated Press 4 minute read Saturday, May. 2, 2026

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) — Nelly Korda capped off a strong finish with a big drive and an 8-iron to 18 inches for eagle on the final hole Saturday, giving her another 5-under 67 that stretched her lead to three shots in the Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba.

At stake for the No. 1 player in women's golf is a chance to win back-to-back on the LPGA and become the first player since Annika Sorenstam in 2001 to start a season with six consecutive tournaments finishing no worse than runner-up.

She has played in the final group in all six of her tournaments this year.

Equally impressive is that Korda is coming off a win at major championship, going wire-to-wire in The Chevron Championship at Memorial Park, a big course for big hitters. El Camaleon is tight with trouble on both sides, and she's navigating that just fine.

Stewart Cink pushes lead to 3 in Alabama in bid for 2nd straight senior major

The Associated Press 3 minute read Saturday, May. 2, 2026

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Stewart Cink increased his lead to three strokes Saturday in tricky wind conditions at the Regions Tradition in his bid to win consecutive senior major titles.

After opening with two 7-under 65s at Greystone to take a two-shot edge, Cink had a 71 to get to 15-under 201 in his home state event. He won the major Senior PGA Championship two weeks ago in Florida for his third victory of the year on the 50-and-over tour.

“Overall today it was just a lot harder day to score,” Cink said. “I wasn’t quite as sharp either as I was the first couple days, but sometimes the golf course it just turns on you a little bit. The wind direction on a lot of the holes was awkward and it was difficult to pick out a lot of the gusts in the direction of it.”

In wind gusting to 20 mph, the 52-year-old Cink offset a double bogey on the par-5 15th with birdies on the par-3 14th and par-5 18th.

Young in control at Doral, leads Cadillac Championship with rain in forecast

Tim Reynolds, The Associated Press 5 minute read Saturday, May. 2, 2026

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — Cameron Young didn't have as easy of a time in the third round of the Cadillac Championship as he did while building a big lead Thursday and Friday.

It didn't seem to matter, either.

Young is still in full control at Trump National Doral, after his round of 2-under 70 on Saturday got him to 15 under for the week. He had a six-shot lead over a group that includes top-ranked Scottie Scheffler into a potentially rainy final round Sunday.

“No lead is safe out here,” Young said. “I’m going to go try to execute my plan as if I’m right around the lead or just trying to have a good day out there, not necessarily with any thought toward where I’m at in the tournament.”

Jim Furyk picks Justin Leonard and Stewart Cink to be assistant captains at Ryder Cup

The Associated Press 2 minute read Saturday, May. 2, 2026

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk said Saturday that Justin Leonard and Stewart Cink will be two of his assistants for the 2027 matches at Adare Manor in Ireland.

Furyk announced the selections at the Kentucky Derby. Both were under consideration as captain, and their appointments could indicate a future captaincy.

Leonard played in three Ryder Cups — two of them U.S. victories — and is best known for his 45-foot birdie putt at The Country Club in 1999 that clinched the Americans' comeback against Europe.

This is Leonard's first time as a Ryder Cup assistant. He was an assistant under Furyk at the 2024 Presidents Cup and Furyk referred to him as “my right-hand man."

No pars required: An adventurous start for Matt McCarty in the third round at Doral

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — Matt McCarty made the start of his third round at the Cadillac Championship an adventurous one.

He missed a 12-foot birdie putt and settled for a tap-in par on the par-5 8th hole Saturday — and that was the first par of his day at Trump National Doral, after an opening seven-hole stretch that featured an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys.

He began the day with a 9-foot putt for eagle at the par-5 opening hole, and his wild beginning was underway. The rest of his opening seven holes:
