Young heavyweight Moses Itauma set for ‘litmus test’ against Filip Hrgovic of Croatia

The Associated Press 2 minute read 8:01 AM CDT

LONDON (AP) — Rising heavyweight star Moses Itauma is set for his toughest challenge when he faces Filip Hrgovic of Croatia on Aug. 29 in London, with a title fight likely for the winner.

The 21-year-old southpaw, who has drawn comparisons to a young Mike Tyson, has been eying a title shot in 2026 and turned more heads in March with his brutal knockout of Jermaine Franklin Jr.

“This fight is the litmus test Moses is ready for and it is the one he wanted,” Queensberry promoter Frank Warren said in Friday's announcement of the bout at The 02. “Filip believes it will be too much too soon for the young star.”

Itauma (14-0, 12 KOs) and Hrgovic (21-1, 15 KOs) are first and second, respectively, in the WBO rankings.

New Zealand tightens grip at The Oval as England slumps to 182-5 chasing 463

Foster Niumata, The Associated Press 4 minute read Updated: 1:34 PM CDT

LONDON (AP) — New Zealand was slowly but surely closing in on winning The Oval test after reducing England to 182-5 on Saturday in a doubtful fourth-innings chase of 463.

England interim captain Joe Root was 75 not out at stumps on day four with debutant Jordan Cox beside him and yet to get off the mark.

But even with Root, test cricket's second highest run-scorer, in the middle few gave England a chance of pulling off a miracle comeback.

England came out after tea, already three wickets down for 54, to a spectator with a trumpet blowing the tune to “The Great Escape,” the 1963 Steve McQueen war epic.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — The Hurricanes beat the Chiefs 60-5 to win their second Super Rugby title a decade after the first, leaving no doubt Saturday they are the best attacking team in the competition's history.

The Wellington-based team played with a northerly gale at their back in the first half and had four tries and a 29-0 lead by halftime. They added five more into the wind in the second half including doubles to winger Josh Moorby and flyhalf Ruben Love.

The Hurricanes scored 113 tries in 17 matches in 2026 and finished as the first team in Super Rugby's 30-year history to score more than 100 tries in a season.

Fehi Fineanganofo's first-half try was his 17th of the season and gave him the individual record for most tries in a season until his teammate Moorby scored a try in each half to join him on that number.

Wildfire triggers evacuation order for Lytton, B.C., village ravaged by 2021 blaze

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Updated: 9:56 AM CDT

LYTTON - Some residents in Lytton, B.C., have been told to evacuate as a wildfire threatens the rural village, a community nearly wiped off the map by flames five years ago this month.

The regional district declared state of emergency in Lytton and Blue Sky County, and evacuation orders and alerts have also been issued in the area.

The B.C. wildfire says Saturday morning its crews are battling a fire about three kilometres south of Lytton with a moderate rate of spread and occasional candling along its perimeter.

That appears to be an improvement over Friday night, when the service described it as a "highly to extremely vigorous surface fire with an organized crown."

A young Mystics team stuns the Liberty 86-83, snapping New York’s 8-game streak

Doug Feinberg, The Associated Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 9:38 PM CDT

NEW YORK (AP) — The Washington Mystics are the youngest team in WNBA history, but are growing up fast.

Washington snapped New York's eight-game winning streak, stunning the Liberty 86-83 on Friday night. It ended a 10-game regular-season losing streak to New York dating to 2023.

It was the second time in the past few games that Washington was able to close out a team in the final seconds, thanks in huge part to the play of second-year players Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen. Iriafen returned to the lineup after missing the last few games with a sprained ankle.

“Huge signs of growth,” coach Sydney Johnson said. “We lost a heartbreaker against Indiana. (Caitlin) Clark made a huge shot — big time play there. We are trying to find ways where we can get better. ... Part of this journey we’re on together. I'm proud of them. We applied some of the things we learned.”
