WINNIPEG-BASED Frantic Films picked up a trio of Gemini Awards this week during the Canadian TV awards’ two nights of industry galas in Toronto.

The Space TV series Todd and the Book of Pure Evil won the Gemini for best ensemble performance in a comedy program or series (for cast members Alex House, Maggie Castle, Angela Jill Guingcango, Chris Leavins, Melanie Leishman, Jason Mewes and Bill Turnbull), and the Slice TV series Til Debt Do Us Part was named best lifestyle/practical information series, and Gail Vaz-Oxlade of the Frantic Films series Princess was named best host in a lifestyle/practical information or performing arts program.

Winnipeg-born actor Adam Beach and co-host Evan Adams won the Gemini for best performance or host in a variety program or series, for their performance on The 18th Annual National Aboriginal Achievement Awards.

Local product Dawna Friesen won the coveted best news anchor Gemini for her work on Global National.

The two nights of industry awards — which focused on news, sports and documentary programs, children’s and variety categories as well as technical and craft awards — serve as a leadup to The 26th Annual Gemini Awards‘ broadcast gala, hosted by comedian Russell Peters, which airs Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBC.
