If your house were on fire, heaven forbid, what’s the one item contained within that you would try to take with you? (People, pets and computers not included.)
My bike. Most of my possessions could be replaced, but I’ve ridden that bike for six years, through summer and winter, and have travelled thousands of kilometres on it through Winnipeg’s streets. I am almost as comfortable riding that bike as I am on my own two legs.
What’s the one clothing/fashion item you can’t live without?
My boots. They’re without a doubt the most fantastic footwear I’ve ever experienced. I probably wore them 200 out of 365 days last year, and since I’ve had them they’ve kept my feet dry wading in three different oceans.
What’s your favourite knick-knack and why?
I have a Lego spaceman I received in a set probably 20 years ago, complete with a little plastic interstellar video camera. It may sound cheesy, but he reminds me of the importance of maintaining a childlike sense of wonder with regards to the world we live in, and the excitement of new experiences and acquiring knowledge. We’ve shared a lot of adventures.
What’s the oldest thing you own?
When I was in university I moved into a house with some other students. While clearing dead mice out of a crawl space, I came across copies of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice and Henry V published in 1937. I think they came via a Dauphin school library, and are complete with underlined segments marked “memorize,” pencilled-in class schedules, and personal notes and reminders.
Describe your most beloved piece of furniture.
The first new piece of furniture my fiancée and I acquired as a couple was an Ikea coffee table and storage unit. Ample table space, just the right height to put your feet up and six spacious and convenient storage nooks. Anything new that comes into our living room is judged based on that table.
Is there an edible item we’ll always find in your pantry or fridge?
The only thing that is ALWAYS present is brown sugar. It’s good for all sorts of stuff.
