WINNIPEG — At least 360 Winnipeg employees of Agriculture Canada will be affected by a decision by the federal government to transfer delivery of the AgriStability program to British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

According to an information package given to employees yesterday, the transfer of work to British Columbia is expected to begin in December, 2009 and the transfer to Saskatchewan in January, 2010. Employees in the Farm Income Programs Directorate (FIPD) and the Financial Controls and Reporting Division (FCRD) will be affected.

Program delivery will be consolidated in Winnipeg and the Regina office will close by June 30, 2010.

The total number of affected employees in both provinces is 440.

Some employees will be offered term positions in either Saskatchewan or British Columbia.

Laid off employees in Winnipeg and Regina are also being offered career counselling services.

A government spokesman said every effort will be made to help employees find work with other government departments or within Agriculture Canada.
