An original member of the Manitoba Moose who turned to coaching has been banished from the Central Hockey League for the rest of the season for throwing his clothes — almost all of them — onto the ice in protest.
Greg Pankiewicz, a native of Drayton Valley, Alta., now an assistant coach with the Colorado Eagles, received a 14-game suspension from the league for disrobing and tossing his tie, jacket, shirt and apparently his shoes onto the ice during a game last weekend. That means he’s out for the balance of the CHL season.
His team was leading the Mississippi River Kings at the time, but Pankiewicz objected to the tactics of a linesman during an on-ice melee.
He was also fined by the league, as was the Colorado team.
Pankiewicz was a member of the Moose from 1996 until 1998 and was known as a talented and emotional player. He had 32 and 42 goal seasons that included penalty-minute totals of 222 and 246 minutes.
His career also included 21 NHL games with Calgary.
