Winnipeg’s population grew by 30,166 between 2006 and 2011, according to Canada Census results released today.

Winnipeg had a population of 663,617 on census day last year compared with 633,451 five years earlier.

The 4.8 per cent increase in the city’s population was slower than the province’s overall growth rate of 5.2 per cent. Manitoba’s population climbed to 1,208,268 compared with 1,148,401 five years earlier.

Manitoba’s population growth was double that of the previous five-year period, thanks largely to an influx of more than 64,000 immigrants, twice the number who arrived during the previous five-year census period.

The Winnipeg Census Metropolitan Area - Winnipeg and all adjacent municipalities where more than half the workforce commutes to the city - grew to 730,018 in 2011 from 694,668 in 2006, an increase of 5.1 per cent.
