WINNIPEG – Call them the beater patrol: Police issued 45 tickets and took 11 vehicles off the road last week in an inspection drive.

Between Wednesday and Friday of last week, officers from the city’s central traffic unit and Springfield Police scouted vehicles that appeared to have problems.

“We were looking for vehicles with clearly visible defects,” said Pat. Sgt. Lou Malo.

Of 120 vehicles selected for inspection, all but two had problems, police said.

Eleven vehicles considered so bad that police had them towed away.

The others were allowed to carry on, but their owners must have the vehicles repaired and appear for reinspection by the end of the month.

The 45 tickets officers handed out were for faulty equipment, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without a driver’s licence.

Police warned that more inspections will take place over the summer.
