Semi driver in hospital following collision with train

WINNIPEG - The driver of a semi that collided with a train late Tuesday afternoon on the North Perimeter Highway is in stable condition this morning, the RCMP said.

Sgt. Line Karpish said the westbound lane, between Gunn Road and Wenzel Street, reopened around 11 a.m. today.

The collision occurred just after 4 p.m. near Wenzel Street on the CEMR Pine Falls line.

The southbound train was moving across the crossing. There were several vehicles stopped when the semi, driven by a 65-year-old man, hit the Central Manitoba Railway train.

The collision caused the train to derail. The semi was hauling peat moss.

Karpish said alcohol is not considered a factor and the investigation is continuing.
