REGINA — Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton improved to 6-0 here at the Men’s World Curling Championship Tuesday afternoon, drilling France’s Thomas Dufour 11-6.

The victory sets the stage for a first place showdown at the Brandt Centre Tuesday night between Team Canada’s Stoughton and Scotland’s Tommy Brewster, who is also 6-0 heading into tonight after a 5-3 win over China earlier on Thursday.

Canada scored early and often against France, as Stoughton drew for a three-ender in the first end and then had an open hit for three more in the third end to jump out to a 6-1 lead.

“We just made some great shots early and things went our way from there,” Stoughton said afterward.

Stoughton was asked if he is comfortable with the state of his team’s game now. “I think we’re pretty darn close. We’ve got a big test tonight with Scotland. We’ll know a little more tonight.”

France is hardly a curling power but this particular foursome had a 4-1 record coming into the Canada game and had been performing well beyond expectations until they ran into the Stoughton juggernaut.

The game was marked by the unlikely sight of a Winnipeg-based team wearing green-coloured Team Canada jackets in honour of a ‘Green Day’ Worlds promotion that saw fans encouraged to wear their Roughriders merchandise to the arena.

Team Canada wore their regular white and red uniform shirts, but wore green jackets over the top as they were piped out before the game.

Stoughton was asked if his colour scheme today means he’s now a Riders fan. “Never,” Stoughton responded. “But Green Day apparently. So we’re Ok with that. It was a lot of fun.”
