A California man is in jail after he allegedly snuck into Canada then threatened and attacked his Internet girlfriend before trying to burn down her home in Virden.

RCMP in Virden got a report of a spousal assault the morning of Nov. 7. They were told the 24-year-old man from Newport Beach, Calif. was destroying the home he shared with the 29-year-old Virden woman.

Police said she was beaten and had a can of cayenne pepper thrown in her face before the man allegedly lit a corn broom on fire and threw it into her house through a broken window. The woman extinguished the fire, police said.

They couple had been in a domestic relationship since May after meeting on an Internet dating site. Police allege she helped him come into Canada illegally by driving him to the U.S.-Canada border and dropping him off. He walked across the border and she picked him up on the Canadian side, according to RCMP.

Eric Gunderson is facing six charges of assault with a weapon, one charge of assault, arson with disregard to human life, two charges of uttering threats, one charge of wilful damage and one charge under the Immigration Refugee Protection Act. He is being held in custody in Brandon.

His next court appearance is Thursday.
