THE local CBC news is losing its anchorwoman to the University of Winnipeg.

Jennifer Rattray, Winnipeg host of the 6 p.m. Canada Now newscast, has been hired as director of strategic initiatives development, as part of U of W president Lloyd Axworthy’s team.

CBC management announced the news to staff yesterday morning by e-mail shortly before the U of W issued a press release.

John Bertrand, director of English radio and TV for Manitoba, said that the anchor job will be posted. But he expects that Krista Erickson, who has been filling in for Rattray during her vacation, will continue in the anchor chair during that process.

“We’re excited for Jennifer,” Bertrand said. “We’re sad to lose her, but you always wish people well when they take on a new challenge.”

Rattray joined the public broadcaster from CKY-TV three years ago.

In the all-important fall ratings book last year, the CBC garnered an average of 23,300 viewers, compared to the market-leading CKY News at 6, which averaged 138,00 viewers.

Rattray’s new job will focus on developing the downtown university’s relationship with inner-city residents and the aboriginal community.
