AN early morning crash that sent three men to hospital — one in critical condition — was a precursor to a wild Monday on Winnipeg streets.

At around 6:30 a.m., a Duffy’s Taxi vehicle travelling southbound on King Edward Street ran a red light and collided with a Cadillac sedan heading east on Sargent Avenue. The impact sent the cab over a snowbank and into the side of a building that houses CDC Computers.

The 57-year-old driver of the cab was taken to hospital in critical condition. He was upgraded to stable later in the afternoon.

The two other men, a 24-year-old passenger in the cab and the driver of the sedan, 21, were transported to hospital in stable condition.

Names of the injured were not released.

The wreck caused all sorts of headaches for motorists who travel the area during the morning commute, as police cordoned off the area for several hours.

That accident was just the startof a busy morning for emergency crews Monday.

A few hours later, police had to respond to a multi-vehicle collision on the northbound section of the St. James Bridge. As many as 18 vehicles were involved in the slippery chain reaction as cars, trucks and cargo vans slid into one another thanks to icy conditions at around 9:30 a.m.

Minutes before the St. James bumper cars got underway, a similar multi-vehicle fender bender took place at the foot of the Disraeli Bridge heading towards Main Street. Only a handful of cars were involved and things were cleared up quickly.

There were no injuries in either bridge incident.
