A transgendered man accused of randomly attacking and killing a well-liked Winnipeg landlord has been released on bail.

Joseph McNabb, 27, will be allowed to live at a women’s treatment centre under strict conditions while his case remains before the courts. No trial dates have been set.

The Crown was opposed to bail for McNabb, who was charged with manslaughter following the death of Evaristo Caniuman in April. McNabb had been in custody until his release on Monday night.

A court-ordered publication ban prevents specific details of the bail hearing from being published.

Caniuman, 60, died of blunt force trauma after he was pushed to the ground and struck his head while walking downtown in broad daylight. McNabb was arrested by Winnipeg police at the scene, just a few feet from the apartment block Caniuman owned near Sargent Avenue and Young Street.

He was allegedly in the process of looting through Caniuman’s pockets to steal his keys and other personal items. McNabb was originally charged with assault, but the charge was upgraded to manslaughter after Caniuman died.

Caniuman came to Canada from Chile, and worked for years to buy a West End apartment block he carefully tended and rented to others. He was praised by his tenants for being a kind, compassionate and hard-working landlord.

His death was the seventh Winnipeg homicide of 2009.
