WINNIPEG — 17 Wing will be conducting a controlled burn at the St. Charles Rifle Range, located inside the Rural Municipalities of Headingley and Rosser, on Saskatchewan Avenue, today from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The military base said today that a component of the range contains a unique ecosystem and in order to preserve this ecosystem as per DND policy, 17 Wing has used controlled burns every few years as a management tool to promote the natural species and control invasives. In addition to the ecological benefits, a controlled burn will also lessen the risk of accidental fires throughout the season.

The burn will be managed by an individual with significant experience with controlled burns and personnel involved will be equipped with water packs and other fire control equipment. 17 Wing will also provide a water truck from its fire hall as a cautionary measure.
