There is already one project related to the completion of the $590 million transit corridor that is seeing a big jump in costs.
Council is being asked to approve the cost of relocating Manitoba Hydro lines near the Parker lands – where the controversial dog-leg route will go – from $4.25 million to $7.25 million.
An administrative report to Friday’s public works committee meeting attributed the price increase to Manitoba Hydro refining “the scope and cost estimate,” for the project, involving a significant increase in the cost of the construction of transmission towers, a more comprehensive geotechnical study, additional design work, and additional sleeving around piles being installed near the city’s aqueduct.
The report says the cost increase will be absorbed in the overall project, without offering details how that will be done.
The hydro lines have to be relocated before construction of the corridor gets underway in 2016.
