Bonnie Korzeniowski will step down as the province’s special envoy for military affairs at the end of June. She has held the post since its creation in February 2008.
Korzeniowski, a former NDP MLA, began the job while still representing the constituency of St. James. When she did not seek re-election in 2011, the government made the controversial decision to maintain her in the role at a salary of $85,000, equivalent to what she earned as a member of the legislature. She was also supplied with an office outside the Legislative Building.
The $190,000 in total costs angered critics, who felt the government could have appointed a sitting MLA to the job at a fraction of the cost.
Premier Greg Selinger said Korzeniowski’s successor will be an MLA. He said Friday it is premature to announce who the successor will be.
Selinger said Korzeniowski had decided to retire. “She was the founder of that role and pioneered very strong relationships with the military in Manitoba,” he said.
A government spokesman said the new envoy’s office will be in the Legislative Building.
