Two weekly papers in southern Manitoba are shutting their doors for good this week.
The Lac du Bonnet Leader and the Beausejour Review are publishing their last editions tomorrow. Both papers are part of the Interlake Publishing Group, owned by Sun Media.
The papers were purchased by the Sun chain in 1998 and since then both have struggled to stay afloat, a source said Wednesday.
Two years ago, the Review shut down its local office in Beausejour. In Lac du Bonnet, the Leader hasn’t been published locally for years. Its printing press was shut down a year after a series of layoffs at the paper. The Leader is published via the Winnipeg Sun.
The Manitoba Community Newspapers Association was informed of the closures on Wednesday.
In the email, the newspaper association said it was in the process of informing its own members.
The Sun Media newspaper chain has yet to offer an official response.
Both towns are served by a second newspaper, The Clipper Weekly.
