City denies it's promoting graffiti

THE City of Winnipeg is not promoting graffiti.

City spokeswoman Tammy Melesko said stencils encouraging graffiti that have appeared on buildings in parts of the Exchange District and other areas of the city were not placed there by city staff.

"There are no city-sponsored graffiti areas," Melesko said.

The stencilled signs, which bear the City of Winnipeg logo, state: City of Winnipeg Authorized Graffiti Area.

In fact, the city has partnered with private agencies to combat the spread of graffiti.

Meanwhile, police announced Friday that they have charged an 18-year-old man with 47 mischief counts after $23,500 of damage was done to North End properties by graffiti between Dec. 1, 2008, and March 3, 2009.
