‘Devastating’ vandalism

VANDALS caused “a devastating amount” of damage to the Redboine Boating Club on Churchill Drive Sunday evening.

“It was kind of a vicious attack on the building, cupboards torn off the wall, doors torn off the dishwasher and microwave, cooler windows smashed, windows in the building smashed,” the club’s acting commodore, Barry Antonius, said Monday.

He said a 100-year-old piano was chopped with an axe, and decades-old trophies were smashed. “It is very, very disappointing to see,” he said.

Police estimated the damage at $20,000, but Antonius said the cost could be double that amount.

Police said the vandals made off with an assortment of power tools and lawn equipment.

Three male youths, all about 16 years old and wearing dark clothing, were reported to be in the area just before 8 p.m. when nearby residents heard glass breaking, police said.

They ask that anyone with information about the incident or the suspect(s) contact investigators at 986-2877 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

 

Man approaches boys

POLICE are on the lookout for a man driving a white minivan who approached two boys near Corydon Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

The two kids, aged two and 13, were walking near Corydon and Arbuthnot Street when they were followed by a slow-moving van. They had just left an area convenience store.

When the kids got to the area of Arbuthnot and McMillan Avenue, the van stopped and the male driver left his vehicle and asked the children if they would like a ride. When they refused, he drove off.

Police describe the driver as a 50-year-old white male, 5-10, with a slim build and wearing a grey hat, a grey winter jacket and dark sunglasses. His white minivan had dark tinted windows. Police don’t have a licence plate number.

Carjacked vehicle found

POLICE have found the Volkswagen Rabbit stolen from a woman at gunpoint at St. Vital Shopping Centre on Friday.

But they’re still searching for the carjacker.

On Sunday evening, police found the stolen car behind a store near the 100 block of Donwood Drive.

On Friday, a white male believed to be about 15 or 16 produced a handgun and demanded the victim’s car keys. The victim turned over her keys and fled into the shopping centre.

The suspect was wearing a white ski jacket and a dark-coloured tuque.

Members of the Winnipeg police major crimes unit are investigating. Anyone who has any information about the incident or the suspect is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers.
