BURROWS NDP MLA Doug Martindale is pulling the plug on politics in favour of the pulpit and the classroom.

The 63-year-old Martindale said Friday he will not seek re-election in the Oct. 4 provincial election. He’s been the MLA for the North End constituency since 1990.

“After a while, it kind of wears down on you,” he said, of the job’s long hours. “It’s kind of like a life sentence, but voluntary.”

Martindale, a United Church minister, said he will teach courses on politics and religion at Booth University College and Providence College, and will go back to preaching on Sundays.

The backbench MLA denied any suggestion he was being pushed out for new blood.

He said if he ran and the NDP wins another majority, he would spend another four years in government, and would be 68 when the next election rolled along.

“I didn’t want to be in that position,” he said.

Burrows is one of the safest NDP seats in the province even with its electoral boundaries changing slightly in the October election.

Martindale said NDP constituency president Melanie Wight will seek the nomination to be the party’s candidate.

Also not seeking re-election for the NDP are St. Norbert MLA Marilyn Brick, Lord Roberts MLA Diane McGifford, Point Douglas MLA George Hickes and Flin Flon MLA Gerard Jennisen.

Progressive Conservative MLAs not seeking election are Rick Borotsik (Brandon West), David Faurschou (Portage la Prairie), Peter George Dyck (Pembina), Len Derkach (Russell) and Gerald Hawranik (Lac du Bonnet).
