RCMP raid co-ordinated grow-ops

FIVE people were arrested this week in an RCMP drug raid that shut down two marijuana grow operations and seized $1.3 million worth of drugs as well as 15 guns.

RCMP Sgt. Line Karpish said the raid was carried out Wednesday at two rural properties in the RM of Alonsa.

At a property near Crane River, police found 204 marijuana plants and 14 firearms. A 40-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were found in a residence on the property face weapons and drug charges.

Karpish said the second raid took place in a farm field about 14 kilometres from the first location, near Cayer, where 725 marijuana plants and 20 pounds of processed marijuana were found. Police also found one rifle. No residences were found at the second site, but tents had been set up.

A 42-year-old man has been charged with growing marijuana and possession for the purpose of trafficking. He remains in custody.

Two others arrested at the Cayer site, a 55 year-old local man and a 26-year-old man from Winnipeg, are facing drugs and weapon charges.

Karpish said it's alleged the two sites are part of a co-ordinated criminal venture. She said it's unknown if those arrested have ties to organized crime, but the grow-ops are part of an integrated grow-and-distribution network in the province.
