Hey there, time traveller!

Get your ghost on
Look up. Look way up. You’ve seen the faded signage on many Exchange District buildings. Today, take the Exchange District Ghost Sign Walking Tour — a 90-minute tour that tells of the life behind the advertisements that have added to the character of the neighbourhood since before your bubba was born. Presented by Heritage Winnipeg and the Advertising Association of Winnipeg, the tour is $20 and begins at 3 p.m. Go to eventbrite.com for tickets.
Goonies in Gimli
It’s the last night to catch a movie at the beach. The 16th annual Gimli Film Festival is winding down, but today is still filled with all sorts of movies at various locations throughout the town, ending with a free screening of The Goonies on the beach at 10 p.m. Go to gimlifilm.com for the full schedule, or just get in the car and go.
Dancing in the park
Grab a lawn chair and your theatre glasses and head to Assiniboine Park for Ballet in the Park. From Wednesday to Friday, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents selected performances by the RWB dancers and students from the professional and recreational divisions of the RWB School. Featuring excerpts from Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story and The Nutcracker, the performances are free and begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Lyric Stage. Food trucks will also be pirouetting around the area. Go to rwb.org for more information.
Have a Grape night
The Grapes of Wrath, the folk-rocky band who introduced themselves to Canada in 1989, are at the West End Cultural Centre Thursday. Touring in support of their new album, High Road, the original members will also reminisce with songs from their album Now and Again. Tickets are $25 and available online or at the venue. Go to wecc.ca for tickets.
Hunt for items made by hand
Not to replace the beloved tradition of the Saturday morning garage sale, but this is much more cute. The St. Norbert Handmade & Vintage Sale is Saturday inside the St. Norbert Community Centre arena. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., you can browse through local handmade artistries and vintage and refurbished ware. A crafting corner will also be set up for kids over three to crank out the crafts. Admission is $1. Check out the farmers market while you’re there.
Get cool in the country
Escape the heat of the city into the cool reprieve of the marsh. This weekend, Oak Hammock Marsh hosts the Hazy, Lazy Days of Summer. From 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., bring your core temperature down by splashing in the artesian springs, or take an easy, breezy canoeing adventure through the marsh. Plus, there will be arts and craft in the shade. Go to oakhammockmarsh.ca for more info.
Off to the races
The Festival of Racing starts Saturday and continues through the long weekend at the Assinboia Downs Gaming and Event Centre. Sit in the clubhouse and graze at the buffet while you watch the RCMP Musical Ride and the Manitoba Mile, or get outside and see, hear and smell the horses whisk by. The festival culminates with Derby Day on the holiday Monday. Go to asdowns.ca for more info.
