RUPESH Patel was moments away from his restaurant when he got a frantic call from one of his employees telling him about an accident at the store on Wednesday afternoon.
"They said, ‘You better come here really fast.’ I told him I was just one minute away," Patel said.
As he approached, the restaurateur’s face turned from worry to horror as he saw a U-Haul truck buried into the brown brick wall at the side of his restaurant.
"I was just devastated. I thought, ‘What is this?’ " he said.
Police were called just after 4 p.m. after the rental truck crashed through the wall of the Extreme Pita-Booster Juice restaurant on Portage Avenue next to the University of Winnipeg. Patel has owned the Extreme Pita side of the business for almost two years.
He didn’t have a damage estimate, but said the truck smashed into the grills and the cold table where food was made.
He said no one in the restaurant was injured and that he has no idea how long the accident will put him out of business. With university classes starting up on Monday, Patel is worried.
The male driver of the vehicle, whose name was not released, was sent to hospital in stable condition.
Police are still investigating the crash.
