The Fisherman and His Soul
Son of Warehouse (Venue 5), to July 24
“Love is better,” says the fisherman in Oscar Wilde’s fairy tale The Fisherman and His Soul. Better than wisdom, he tells the soul he gave up for love. Better than riches.
That sounds ripe for the stage, but this dramatization of Wilde’s short story does not contain enough detail to explain the Romeo and Juliet-esque ending.
The production relies heavily on special effects that are particularly well done despite a bare-bones budget. The best characters — a priest, a merchant and a witch — are played in masks. The scene with masked witches dancing in the moonlight is particularly powerful. Puppetry and shadow images are also used to great effect, although in places the shadows are perhaps unintentionally funny.
