Coco Gauff will be a player-owner for the Florida franchise in the new season of World Team Tennis

NEW YORK (AP) — Coco Gauff will be a player-owner for the Florida franchise that will compete in the new season of World Team Tennis.

The two-time Grand Slam singles champion is scheduled to play in the Florida Flamingos Racquet Club's home matches on Dec. 14 and 15. The team will play in Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, home of the NHL's Florida Panthers.

Gauff grew up in Delray Beach, Florida.

“I’m looking forward to playing at home in front of my family and friends in South Florida," Gauff said Thursday in a statement. "It’s not often, as a tennis player, that we get to compete as part of a team, so I’m excited for the new experience, not only for myself but, even more importantly, for the fans.”

Italy — the two-time defending champion — was trailing 1-0 after Zhang Shuai defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-0, 6-2 to delight the home supporters.

But Paolini then beat Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 7-6 (4) and teamed up with Sara Errani to defeat Guo Hanyu and Jiang Xinyu 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in their doubles match to win the tie.

It was the 30-year-old Paolini’s ninth successive match win in the tournament.

Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo allowed just two of the 20 break chances they faced in a 6-2, 7-5 win over Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva.

On Friday, Spain will face Czechia, formerly known as the Czech Republic, which brought Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzková to Shenzhen.

The Czechs beat Britain 2-0 on Tuesday to stay on course for a 12th title in the competition previously called Fed Cup. The United States, which did not qualify for the finals, won a record 18 titles.

The 26-year-old Somani, whose career ranking peaked at No. 256 in doubles, tested positive for trimetazidine at a lower-tier event last year in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The banned heart medication is the same substance used in the high-profile cases of Valieva — which flared at the 2022 Beijing Olympics — and Chinese star swimmer Sun Yang in 2014.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency said an independent tribunal banned Somani until September 2029.

The decisive victory came just 35 minutes after Auger-Aliassime had walked off the court following a doubles loss alongside Duncan Chan. It was his third match in two days, having also defeated Quentin Halys in three sets Friday.

“I don’t really have words,” said Canada captain Frank Dancevic. “It’s incredible for the Davis Cup, for the country to have a player like that who can play at his level, playing singles and doubles and being in shape to play three matches over two days. It’s not easy.”

The victory improved Auger-Aliassime’s Davis Cup record to 14-4, including an 11-2 mark in singles. The world No. 5 has now won 13 consecutive Davis Cup matches, including nine straight in singles.
