Kyrgios won’t play singles at the Australian Open, saying his body is not ready for 5-set tennis

The Associated Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 9:50 PM CST

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Nick Kyrgios says he's not fit enough to play singles at the Australian Open but will compete in doubles with his Australian mate Thanasi Kokkinakis at Melbourne Park.

Kyrgios, who played in the so-called “ Battle of the Sexes ” exhibition against Aryna Sabalenka last month, had been tipped by local media to receive one of the three remaining wild-card entries from Tennis Australia.

TA announced later on Friday that 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka and Australian players Jordan Thompson and Chris O’Connell had received them. The 40-year-old Wawrinka has already announced this year will be his final season on tour.

Kyrgios said Friday on social media he would only play doubles in the tournament, which starts Jan. 18. Multiple wrist and knee surgeries have limited Kyrgios to just seven singles tour matches over the past three years, with his ranking sinking to 670.

Tennis Kenya admits to error in granting a wildcard after player’s performance goes viral

The Associated Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 4:52 PM CST

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Tennis Kenya acknowledged it erred in granting an Egyptian player entry to a professional tournament after video of her dismal performance that included 20 double faults circulated on social media.

The 21-year-old player, Hajar Abdelkader, was given a wildcard entry and lost 6-0, 6-0 in 37 minutes in a first-round match that raised questions about her level of play. She struggled with serving and court positioning.

Tennis Kenya, the governing body for the sport in the east African country, is hosting the International Tennis Federation’s W35 tournament this week.

“In hindsight, Tennis Kenya acknowledges that this wildcard should not have been granted. The federation has taken note of this experience and will ensure that such an extremely rare occurrence never happens again," it said in a statement Thursday.

Top-ranked Sabalenka calls season schedule ‘insane,’ plans to skip tournaments to avoid burnout

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Aryna Sabalenka describes the tennis schedule as “insane” and said she'll risk fines in order to skip tournaments to avoid injuries or burnout.

For all those concerns, though, the world's top-ranked woman is happy to have as much competition as possible before the season-opening Grand Slam in Australia.

Sabalenka beat Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday to move into the Brisbane International quarterfinals, where she'll take on fifth-seeded Madison Keys almost a year after losing to her in the Australian Open final.

Keys, her left leg heavily taped, came back from a set and a break down to beat 12th-seeded Diana Shnaider 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) on Thursday.

Elina Svitolina stays on track with another win in Auckland

The Associated Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 2:08 AM CST

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Top-seeded Elina Svitolina again relied on her “fighting spirit” Thursday, beating wild-card entry Katie Boulter 7-5, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.

Both players struggled on serve in windy conditions on center court. There were nine service breaks in the match, which the No. 13-ranked Svitolina clinched on her third match point.

“Katie is a great fighter so I was expecting a tough match,” Svitolina said. “She can strike the ball very well, as she did today, and it was not an easy match for us with the wind swirling around.”

Svitolina dropped her serve in the third game, immediately broke back but was broken again in the ninth. She won some exceptional clutch points to break Boulter again and take the first set.

PERTH, Australia (AP) — After a singles loss and social media drama earlier in the week, Coco Gauff did all her talking on court Wednesday in the United Cup quarterfinals.

Gauff won twice — once in singles and then a clinching victory in mixed doubles — to send the Americans into the semifinals in Sydney on Saturday.

Gauff beat Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-2 to give the defending champion United States a 1-0 lead over Greece. Taylor Fritz, affected by knee tendinitis, had a chance in his singles match to clinch the quarterfinal against Stefanos Tsitsipas, but lost 6-4 7-5. That sent the quarterfinal match to a mixed doubles decider.

In that match, Gauff and Christian Harrison beat Tsitsipas and Sakkari 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. It was on track for a runaway in the third-set, 10-point tiebreaker when the Americans led 4-0 and 5-1, but the Greek pair rallied to level it at 6-6. Gauff and Harrison held on for the win.

BRISBANE - After a 2025 season marked by a climb up the world rankings and two ATP titles, Canadian Denis Shapovalov opened 2026 with a loss Tuesday.

The 23rd-ranked Shapovalov, of Richmond Hill, Ont., fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to Belgium’s Raphaël Collignon in the first round of the Brisbane International.

Shapovalov, who dropped as low as 140th in 2024 after a knee injury, was the sixth seed at the ATP 250 hard-court event, while Collignon came through qualifying.

It was the first meeting between the two players.

Sabalenka dominates Bucsa at Brisbane International and says Battle of the Sexes helped

John Pye, The Associated Press 4 minute read Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — The Battle of the Sexes exhibition was a bit of fun for Aryna Sabalenka and a showdown she regarded as good preparation for the Australian Open.

In her first match since playing Nick Kyrgios in Dubai last month, No. 1-ranked Sabalenka overwhelmed No. 50 Cristina Bucsa 6-0, 6-1 on Tuesday to start her title defense at the Brisbane International. The aim was to lay down a marker ahead of a potential quarterfinal against Madison Keys, who beat Cartney Kessler 6-4, 6-3.

The exhibition attracted some criticism but also, at least as far as Sabalenka was concerned, a lot of positive attention.

“It was fun. It was a great challenge. I think we brought so many eyes on tennis," she said. "What I’m sad about is that some people got it wrong, the whole idea of that event. And I don’t care.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Venus Williams has lost her first singles match of 2026 to fifth-seeded Magda Linette at the WTA Tour tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.

The 45-year-old Williams put up a superb show before losing 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to the No. 52-ranked Linette, who was only two years old when Williams played her first professional singles match.

Tuesday's match was Williams' 1,101st in singles on the WTA Tour. But the competitiveness she showed against a player 12 years her junior will give her confidence as she heads to Australia for the Hobart International and the Australian Open.

The seven-time major champion received wild-card entries into the Auckland tournament and also in Hobart from Jan. 12 and at the first Grand Slam tournament of the year at Melbourne Park.

Senators frustrated with inconsistent goaltending after loss to Red Wings

Lisa Wallace, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026

OTTAWA - Forgive the Ottawa Senators if they seem just a little frustrated.

Monday night the Senators (20-16-5) played well enough to win but a few costly mistakes and subpar goaltending cost them a critical two points against a divisional rival.

Ottawa fell 5-3 to the Detroit Red Wings and yet the score could have easily been reversed considering how they played.

The reality is this is not the first loss that can be attributed to poor goaltending.

Howard Fendrich, The Associated Press 3 minute read Monday, Jan. 5, 2026

Novak Djokovic withdrew from the Australian Open tuneup tournament in Adelaide, saying Monday that he isn't prepared to return to competition ahead of the year's first Grand Slam event.

“To all my fans in Adelaide, unfortunately I’m not quite physically ready to compete in the Adelaide International next week,” Djokovic posted on social media. “It’s personally very disappointing to me, as I have such great memories of winning the title there two years ago. I was really excited about returning as it truly felt like playing at home.”

Djokovic, a 38-year-old with a men's-record 24 major singles championships, has not played an official match in nearly two full months. He defeated Lorenzo Musetti in the final of the Hellenic Championship in Athens on Nov. 8, then announced he would be pulling out of the ATP Finals for the second year in a row, citing a shoulder injury.

“My focus is now on my preparation for the Australian Open,” Djokovic wrote Monday, “and I look forward to arriving in Melbourne soon and seeing all the tennis fans in Australia.”

TORONTO - Rising star Gabriel Diallo headlines the five-man roster for Canada's Davis Cup qualifier against Brazil next month at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

The first-round tie is set for Feb. 6-7 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

Diallo is tabbed to make his 10th consecutive Davis Cup appearance. He cracked the top 100 in the ATP Tour's world rankings in his breakthrough 2024 season and won his first ATP Tour title last year at the Libema Open.

Gauff clarifies comments on American tennis fans just before a surprising loss at the United Cup

The Associated Press 4 minute read Monday, Jan. 5, 2026

PERTH, Australia (AP) — Coco Gauff dropped a post on social media just before she started her United Cup singles match Monday, hoping to add context to her recent comments about American tennis fans.

The match didn't go well for the No. 4-ranked Guaff, who lost the first five games and struggled in a 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-0 loss to No. 42 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in Perth.

It gave Spain a 1-0 lead over the defending champion U.S. team in the Group A contest. But then Taylor Fritz saved a match point on the way to winning the men's singles match and Gauff combined with Christian Harrison in the mixed doubles to clinch victory for the Americans.

“I‘m going to clarify because people are dragging this out of context,” Gauff said in the pre-match morning social media post, referring to the “worst” comment she made earlier at the tournament when comparing support for players from smaller countries with the kind of support American players receive on foreign soil.

Novak Djokovic cuts ties with the PTPA players’ association he co-founded

The Associated Press 3 minute read Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026

Novak Djokovic is cutting ties with the Professional Tennis Players Association, a group he co-founded that sued the sport's governing bodies last year, writing on social media Sunday that “my values and approach are no longer aligned with the current direction of the organization.”

The 24-time Grand Slam champion announced at the 2020 U.S. Open that he and now-retired Canadian player Vasek Pospisil were launching the PTPA. They said they were aiming to offer representation for players who are independent contractors in a largely individual sport.

One of the goals made clear along the way was to become a sort of full-fledged union that negotiates collective bargaining agreements like those that exist in team sports, although that sort of thing hasn't happened.

Djokovic said Sunday on X that he had “ongoing concerns regarding transparency, governance, and the way my voice and image have been represented.”
