New NFL season kicks off with permanent kickoff changes and more

Josh Dubow, The Associated Press 6 minute read Tuesday, Sep. 2, 2025

A new NFL season is set to begin with last year's experiment on the new kickoff becoming permanent with a new tweak and several other changes in rules and officiating.

The league also will implement changes to the overtime rule for the regular season, expand replay assist, crack down on bad sportsmanship and use Hawk-Eye virtual measuring to replace the old-time chains to determine first downs.

The league experimented with the so-called dynamic kickoff in 2024 in hopes of more returns while also making the play safer. Owners voted in April to make the change permanent while moving touchbacks on kicks that reach the end zone on the fly from the 30 to the 35, which is expected to lead to more kicks in play and more returns.

There was no change in the tush push play that Philadelphia used so successfully on the way to winning the Super Bowl last season.

Eagles’ Jalen Carter apologizes following ejection for spitting on Cowboys’ Dak Prescott

Dan Gelston, The Associated Press 5 minute read Updated: 1:22 AM CDT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia defensive tackle Jalen Carter apologized after he was ejected for spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott moments after the Eagles' pregame Super Bowl championship celebration.

Carter was tossed for for unsportsmanlike conduct six seconds into Philadelphia's 24-20 victory in the lightning-delayed NFL season opener that ended early Friday. The Eagles were hit with a 15-yard penalty before the first snap from scrimmage, and the Cowboys scored on the opening drive on Javonte Williams' 1-yard touchdown run.

“It was more of a surprise than anything,” Prescott said. “The refs obviously saw it. Threw the flag. I was like, `Hell yeah! We get 15 yards to start the game off.′ Didn’t realize he was getting ejected. Unfortunate that he did. Hell of a player.”

Prescott and Carter exchanged words after the opening kickoff, and Carter spit on Prescott's jersey before backing away. Prescott quickly motioned to a nearby official who threw the flag and sent Carter packing. Fans booed as Carter walked off slowly, holding his helmet in his hands behind his back.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Cliff Smith Jr. was still a few years away from being known as Method Man and helping Wu-Tang Clan take the hip-hop world by storm when he got hooked on what became one of his life's biggest passions.

Rooting for the New York Jets.

“I think a lot of it has to do with their colors,” Method Man told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Friday from Canada, where he's attending the Toronto International Film Festival. “I love that green and white. There's just something about it. It says we're blue collar and we came here to fight.

"I'm sorry, not sorry. I love it.”

Steelers captain Cam Heyward taking wait-and-see approach to playing as contract issue lingers

The Associated Press 3 minute read 2:48 PM CDT

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cam Heyward's 15th season in the NFL starts on Sunday, when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the New York Jets.

Whether the four-time All-Pro defensive tackle is on the field when it happens remains uncertain.

Heyward said Friday he's “preparing” to play against New York, but stopped short of making a firm commitment amid a contract impasse with the only team he's played for.

The 36-year-old Heyward is looking for a raise after having a remarkable comeback season in 2024, which followed an injury-marred 2023. Heyward said in August that he took a pay cut to play last year, and he's looking for the team to make good after he returned to form.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Even though Puka Nacua has had several months to get used to the idea, the Los Angeles Rams' young star receiver still can't quite believe he's about to play alongside Davante Adams.

“We were just out at practice the other day, and I’m sitting next to him under the tent while it’s 100-and-something (degrees) outside, and I'm just thinking, like, dude, I think you could scroll back somewhere in my Twitter profile and there’d be tweets saying, 'Go Pack Go. I can’t wait to watch the Packers, and especially to watch No. 17,'” Nacua said with a grin.

Nacua actually gave that No. 17 to Adams when the veteran signed with Los Angeles several months ago, changing his jersey to No. 12 after spending his first two seasons wearing Adams' famous number. Nacua's depth of respect for Adams is obvious, and he's eager to see what they can do now that they're spending their Sundays together.

“To think that my locker is going to be next to his as we’re putting on the same uniform is still super-exciting,” Nacua said. “It feels surreal, but I know it’s going to be a headache for the defense across from us.”

The Associated Press 2 minute read 2:31 PM CDT

CINCINNATI (AP) — Center Ted Karras signed a one-year contract extension with the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday worth $5 million that goes through the 2026 season.

“If you look at the history of my career I’m not afraid to be a free agent. I’ve been a free agent many times but I wanted to be a part of the plan here and I know we have big things ahead of us,” Karras said.

The Bengals open the season on Sunday at Cleveland.

Karras signed with the Bengals in 2022 after previous stops in Miami and New England. He has started 53 games with the Bengals and played 99.5% of their offensive snaps.

Cowboys paid Lamb and passed on Parsons, so the drops are going to hurt a little more

Schuyler Dixon, The Associated Press 5 minute read 1:30 PM CDT

CeeDee Lamb tapped on his chest after the Dallas Cowboys knew for sure they weren't going to leave Philadelphia with a win over the defending champs on opening night in the NFL, as if the star receiver were saying, “This is on me.”

Three critical drops by Lamb, and another throw from Dak Prescott that slipped through his arms on a diving attempt on Dallas' final offensive play, had plenty to do with the 24-20 loss to the Eagles in a game that ended early Friday morning, a week after the Cowboys traded star edge rusher Micah Parsons to Green Bay.

Philadelphia defensive tackle Jalen Carter's ejection for spitting on Prescott before the first snap probably gave the Cowboys a better chance to pull off the upset. They might have done it with any one of three catches Lamb should have made.

The one that hurt Dallas the most came on Prescott's perfect throw on a deep post route that would have gained about 50 yards with less than three minutes remaining.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Read the jokes that spread through text chains and chats and social media — everything from Dak Tuah! to a Star Wars-esque Dak Spit First to the Seinfeld-inspired magic loogie memes — and they were funny enough to make everyone do a, well, spit take.

Jalen Carter might not find the laughs at his expense so amusing.

Carter, the Philadelphia Eagles standout defensive tackle, finds himself in hot water after he was ejected for spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott only six seconds into Philadelphia’s 24-20 victory in the NFL season opener. Carter was tossed for unsportsmanlike conduct and later apologized for conduct that cost him a chance to play even one snap in the Eagles' win.

“It was a mistake that happened on my side. It won’t happen again,” Carter said.

The NFL made it clear before the season that sportsmanship would be a point of emphasis.

Jalen Carter provided the first example of misconduct. Now, he awaits discipline from the league.

With tens of millions watching the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles taking on the rival Dallas Cowboys, Carter spat on Dak Prescott six seconds into the league’s opener on Thursday night.

The 24-year-old defensive tackle, a second-team All-Pro last season, was ejected from the game, forcing the Eagles to play without their best defensive player. They still won 24-20.

Alanis Thames, The Associated Press 4 minute read Updated: 4:06 PM CDT

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins tight end Darren Waller is dealing with a hip strain and will not play in Miami's season opener Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

Waller was originally injured before practice on Wednesday — a session he missed because it was previously decided that he would avoid three-consecutive practice days — and Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Waller exacerbated the injury before Thursday's practice.

“While trying to prevent a setback, he had a setback before practice," McDaniel said Friday. "What does that mean? It means he's being challenged, the most eager player to play has another challenge. I know he's up for it, but I don't think he's going to play this week, which wasn't planned. But the way I look at it is, with your first player that comes out of retirement try not to have a plan that you have no experience with.”

The Dolphins ruled him out later Friday afternoon.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Typically, Klint Kubiak talks with his younger brother, Klay, quite a bit.

Just not this week.

Klint is in the midst of preparing for his first game as offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. Klay has the same job with the San Francisco 49ers and is on the verge of his first game as an NFL coordinator.

Conveniently for the Kubiaks, their teams open the season by playing each other Sunday at Lumen Field.

Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Russell Wilson and Ben Roethlisberger won Super Bowls in their second season in the NFL.

Several other quarterbacks took big leaps in Year 2. Joe Burrow and Brock Purdy led their teams to conference championships. So did Dan Marino and Colin Kaepernick.

Patrick Mahomes went to the AFC title game, losing to Brady. Mark Sanchez went there in his first two seasons. Carson Wentz finished third in MVP voting in his second season despite missing the final three games and playoffs.

Seven sophomore quarterbacks enter Week 1 as starters, including six who were among the first 12 picks in the 2024 draft.

How the NFL will have ads on its RedZone Channel for the first time

Joe Reedy, The Associated Press 3 minute read 5:01 AM CDT

NFL RedZone will no longer have seven hours of commercial-free football.

The channel will still have seven hours of NFL action from the early- and late-afternoon Sunday windows, beginning at 1 p.m. EDT, but there will be ads airing regularly for the first time this season.

“I hope everyone watches and they’ll still have the same RedZone feels that they’ve had for 16 years,” host Scott Hanson said Thursday night in a phone interview.

The addition of ads, though, is not expected to impact the show since some of the ads could occur when all of the games are on a commercial break or most have gone to halftime. The format also ensures that game action will continue to be shown alongside the ad.

Taylor Swift is a good luck charm for soccer team hosting Travis Kelce’s 1st game in Brazil

Mauricio Savarese, The Associated Press 4 minute read Updated: 11:53 AM CDT

SAO PAULO (AP) — Taylor Swift is very likely not aware of it, but she's considered a good luck charm for the Brazilian soccer team hosting Friday's game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers.

The unlikely connection between the pop superstar — whose fiancé is Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — and one of the most popular clubs in soccer-mad Brazil lies in the release date of her albums dating to 2006. Corinthians has gone unbeaten in all but one game played right before each album release since then and all but one right after.

It all started as a joke about five years ago, but it has developed into a superstition for local fans.

Until last year, Corinthians won 13 matches and drew seven in such instances. Some were against bitter rival Palmeiras and Brazilian social media was flooded with memes and montages of Swift wearing black and white — Corinthians' colors.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts shrugged on a TD celebration and did his best to be like Mike.

Through spit and rain, a ceremony and a setback, Hurts and the Super Bowl champion Eagles weathered the storm and showed why they're again a favorite to hoist a second straight Lombardi Trophy.

Hurts rushed for two touchdowns for the Eagles, who lost hot-tempered star defender Jalen Carter early for spitting on Dak Prescott, then withstood a rare weather delay and needed a late stop to beat the Dallas Cowboys 24-20 early Friday in a wild start to the NFL season.

With one last chance at a comeback, Prescott threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-3 with 1:54 left to send what was left of a thinned out Eagles crowd into a frenzy.
