The Associated Press 2 minute read Thursday, Apr. 2, 2026

Two-time All-Pro cornerback and 2019 NFL AP Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, who last played in 2024, has announced his retirement.

Gilmore issued an Instagram post Thursday that showed video highlights of his career and closed with the message, “The game ends here, but the journey continues.”

“To my first love, Football — As a young, scrappy kid from Rock Hill, South Carolina, with humble beginnings, the eldest of 6 — you gave me focus, opportunity, strength, and friends to last a lifetime,” Gilmore said in the post. “From my first game with Finley Road Falcons to two Super Bowls, multiple Pro Bowls, and a Defensive Player of the Year Award, you taught me the invaluable lesson of working hard and believing in myself.”

Gilmore also thanked his wife and kids “for making it possible for me to chase my dreams” and his parents “for raising me to be the man I am today.”

Joey Browner, 3-time All-Pro defensive back with the Minnesota Vikings, dies at 65

The Associated Press 2 minute read Sunday, Mar. 29, 2026

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Joey Browner, a three-time All-Pro defensive back who played nine of his 10 NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, has died, the team said. He was 65.

The Vikings announced Browner's death Sunday and said his family had informed the team. A cause of death was not released.

A native of Warren, Ohio, who played in college at Southern California, Browner was selected by Minnesota with the 19th overall pick in the 1983 NFL draft. It was the first time the Vikings had used a first-round pick on a defensive back.

Blessed with a combination of speed and size for his position — he was 6-foot-2 and 221 pounds — Browner played for the Vikings from 1983-1991 and finished his career with 37 interceptions, the fifth most in franchise history. He also had 18 forced fumbles in 138 games for Minnesota.

Replacement officials, kickoffs and other rule changes will be discussed at NFL’s annual meeting

Rob Maaddi, The Associated Press 5 minute read Sunday, Mar. 29, 2026

Replacement officials, potential rule changes, artificial intelligence, health and safety issues, international growth and flag football will be among many topics discussed when NFL owners, executives and coaches gather for their annual meeting this week in Arizona.

One topic that dominated the conversation this time last year — the tush push — isn’t on the agenda because there is no proposal to eliminate the play even though it was nearly banned in a close vote in 2025.

NFC coaches will speak to reporters on Monday, AFC coaches will do so on Tuesday and Commissioner Roger Goodell closes it out.

Here’s a look at the several topics:

Super Bowl heading back to Las Vegas in 2029

Mark Anderson, The Associated Press 3 minute read Monday, Mar. 30, 2026

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Super Bowl will return to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2029 for the second time after NFL owners voted Monday in Phoenix to award the nation's gambling and entertainment capital the big game.

Las Vegas getting the Super Bowl back after Kansas City defeated San Francisco 25-22 in overtime in February 2024 seemed like only a matter of time.

Commissioner Roger Goodell all but gave that possibility his blessing after the first Super Bowl in a city the league long shunned because of concerns about legalized sports betting.

“We’re excited to bring the Super Bowl back to Las Vegas and provide our fans another incredible experience in one of America’s greatest sport and entertainment destinations,” Goodell said in a statement.

Tom Brady says he’s weighed coming out of retirement, but the NFL doesn’t like the idea

The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, Mar. 27, 2026

Tom Brady revealed in an interview released on Thursday that he considered coming out of retirement, but the National Football League wasn't particularly receptive to the idea.

Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion and minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, was asked in a recent interview with CNBC if he's looked into the rules regarding a minority owner returning to NFL play.

“I actually have inquired, and they (the NFL) don’t like that idea very much, so I’m going to leave it at that,” Brady said. “We explored a lot of different things, and I’m very happily retired. Let me say that, too.”

It wouldn't have been Brady's first time coming out of retirement. The three-time league MVP briefly retired during the 2022 offseason after two seasons with the Buccaneers. He had a change of heart 40 days later and went on to play for one more year before retiring “for good” in February 2023.

NFL set to begin hiring and training replacement officials, AP sources say

Rob Maaddi, The Associated Press 4 minute read Monday, Mar. 30, 2026

PHOENIX (AP) — The NFL is moving forward with plans to begin hiring and training replacement officials in the next several weeks because negotiations with the referees’ union have been unsuccessful, two people with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press.

Both people spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because the conversations are private.

The league and the NFL Referees Association have been negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement since the summer of 2024. The current CBA expires on May 31.

The NFL has increased its offer to a 6.45% annual growth rate in compensation over a six-year labor deal, but the NFLRA wants 10% plus $2.5 million for marketing fees, the people said.

Rams WR Puka Nacua went to rehab before being sued for assault and battery by a woman, attorney says

The Associated Press 2 minute read Wednesday, Apr. 1, 2026

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Rams All-Pro wide receiver Puka Nacua is in rehab and was there before he was sued for assault and battery by a woman who says he made an antisemitic statement and bit her on the shoulder on New Year's Eve, according to his attorney.

“He was in (rehab) a substantial period of time before any of these allegations broke ... and he’s scheduled to be there for a while longer,” Levi McCathern told The California Post.

McCathern told the newspaper Nacua's decision to enter rehab was not a direct response to the lawsuit his accuser filed against him late last month, but an attempt “to improve his overall behavior in every aspect of his life.”

Nacua issued an apology last December after performing a gesture that plays upon antisemitic tropes while appearing on an internet livestream.

Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza puts on impressive show at Indiana’s biggest pro day

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Fernando Mendoza warmed up with his college roommate Wednesday while nearly two dozen college teammates took turns running the 40-yard dash.

Then the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback did what he always seems to do — deliver another impressive performance.

All 32 NFL teams sent scouts to Indiana, more than 100 media members were credentialed and dozens of family members and friends of ex-Hoosiers showed up for a pro day unlike any other in school history. Most came to see the guy expected to be the first-overall pick in this month's NFL draft and Mendoza didn't disappoint, using his platform to potentially help his ex-teammates improve their draft stock.

"I feel like it went great,” Mendoza said after throwing the last of his roughly 56 passes inside the John Mellencamp Pavilion. “You know quarterbacks have passed, have done shorter pro days than that. However, I just wanted to make sure everybody could showcase their abilities in front of all 32 NFL teams and really run routes that are applicable to the timing we're going to be running in the NFL.”

No cause of death was provided by the team.

“The thoughts and condolences of the entire Raider Nation are with Barret's family and friends during this difficult time,” the team said in a statement.

The Falcons reworked their leadership team in the offseason, hiring Ian Cunningham as general manager, Matt Ryan as president of football and Kevin Stefanski as coach.

NFL’s last foray into replacement refs featured blown calls, rule mix-ups and the Fail Mary

Josh Dubow, The Associated Press 7 minute read Tuesday, Mar. 31, 2026

The NFL's last foray into replacement officials ended in embarrassment for the league when a botched call and comic confusion in a prime-time game led to the end of a lockout that marred the first three weeks of the 2012 season.

The play known as the Fail Mary proved to be the final straw that helped end that labor dispute, drawing such widespread criticism that even the two major presidential candidates weighed in on it. But it was far from the only instance of a blown call, a lack of understanding of rules and procedures, or question of impartiality.

“Would you let a Toyota dealership work on your brand new Rolls-Royce? That doesn’t work right, does it,” Dallas safety Gerald Sensabaugh said at the time. “Our brand is so big, it’s so important to a lot of people. There’s no way you can have guys that don’t have experience at that level.”

There weren't as many glaring errors when the NFL also used replacement officials for one week of exhibition games and the opening week in 2001 before the labor dispute was resolved shortly after 9/11, and the regular officials returned in time when the season resumed following a one-week break.

Edge rusher Travon Walker and the Jaguars agree on a 4-year, $110M contract extension

Mark Long, The Associated Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 5:52 PM CDT

Edge rusher Travon Walker and the Jacksonville Jaguars agreed Friday on a four-year, $110 million contract extension, his representatives said.

Elite Loyalty Sports said the deal includes $50 million fully guaranteed at signing and up to $77 million in potential guarantees.

Walker, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie contract and had been scheduled to make $15 million guaranteed in 2026.

Walker has 27 1/2 sacks over four seasons. He has 200 tackles, including 36 for a loss, while playing in 63 games. He has yet to make a Pro Bowl and selecting him ahead of Detroit star Aidan Hutchinson appears to be a glaring mistake for the franchise.

NFLPA’s JC Tretter urges NFL to avoid having to use replacement officials

Rob Maaddi, The Associated Press 2 minute read Wednesday, Apr. 1, 2026

The NFL Players Association is urging the league to reach an agreement with the officials’ union to avoid a work stoppage and use of replacement officials.

JC Tretter, the new executive director of the NFLPA, met with Scott Green, the executive director of the NFL Referees Association, and issued a joint statement after meeting on Tuesday.

NFL owners on Tuesday approved a one-year rule for the upcoming season that would allow the replay center in New York to correct “clear and obvious mistakes made by on-field officials that impact the game” in case of a work stoppage involving the NFLRA.

“Player safety requires trained, professional officials on the field,” Tretter said. “They manage the game in real time, enforce the rules, and stop situations from escalating. That can’t be replaced by less-experienced crews or handled remotely. If player safety truly matters, trained professional officials on the field are not negotiable.”
