AHL suspends Syracuse’s Maxim Groshev for 10 games for using racial language at an opponent

The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, Mar. 7, 2025

Syracuse Crunch forward Maxim Groshev was suspended 10 games Friday by the American Hockey League for using what the AHL termed “racially insensitive language” toward an opponent.

The game in question occurred Saturday against Rochester.

Because Groshev already sat out one game, he will be eligible to return to play March 30. He also can appeal the remainder of his suspension after eight games if he takes part in the NHL's Player Inclusion Coalition and makes what is deemed by AHL President and CEO Scott Howson as sufficient progress in the training program.

“The American Hockey League is committed to building a culture that is safe, inclusive, and free from abuse, harassment and all forms of unethical behavior or misconduct, and believes that individual inclusion learning is a key element of improving league-wide culture,” the league said in a statement.

Record revenue and attendance has business booming again for the American Hockey League

Stephen Whyno, The Associated Press 5 minute read Thursday, Jun. 15, 2023

More than 10,000 fans filled the Hershey Bears' home arena on Tuesday night to watch the oldest American Hockey League franchise take on the newest, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, in the Calder Cup Finals.

It was the third consecutive game in the AHL championship series to be sold out and pushed total playoff attendance for the NHL's top developmental league above half a million fans. That's a record for the nearly 90-year-old league that also set a new high water mark for revenue, which president and CEO Scott Howson estimates is 15% to 20% above pre-pandemic levels.

Three years after canceling the playoffs and two years after gutting through a shortened season with almost no fans in arenas and a few teams opting out of playing entirely, business is finally booming again for the AHL.

“We’ve just recovered so quickly,” Howson told The Associated Press this week. “It’s a testament to our product. It’s a testament to our markets. It’s a testament to what our teams are doing and what the staffs of our teams are doing to put people in the building.”
