CALGARY – Brett Sutter announced his retirement from pro hockey after 17 seasons Monday.
The son of former NHL coach Darryl Sutter played in 1,090 games in the American Hockey League, which ranks fourth all-time, and another 60 in the NHL.
Brett Sutter concluded his playing career with the Calgary Flames’ AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, and will join the team’s coaching staff as an assistant.
“Saying goodbye to playing isn’t easy. The game has treated my family and I so well for so long, but the opportunity to stay within the organization that my family loves, makes this transition easier,” Sutter said Monday in a statement.
The 37-year-old forward from Viking, Alta., was a sixth-round pick, 179th overall, of the Flames in 2005. Darryl Sutter, who was coach and GM of the Flames at the time, selected him.
Brett Sutter had eight goals and two assists in 60 NHL games with the Flames, Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild.
He compiled a career 198 goals and 265 assists in the AHL.
Sutter reached a career 1,000 AHL games Dec. 21, 2022, in his first season with the Wranglers, and when his father was in his second stint as head coach of the Flames.
Sutter became the eighth player in the AHL’s 88-year history to reach 1,000 games. The other seven are in the league’s Hall of Fame.
