Power rankings
One man’s totally subjective rankings after 10 weeks of play (last week’s rank in parentheses):
1. (1) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (9-1): Last six wins vs. Edmonton (3), Winnipeg (1) and B.C. (2) — but that’s just nitpicking.
2. (2) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (7-3): Huge effort by Adrian McPherson and now no hurry to rush back Anthony Calvillo.
3. (3) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (6-4): Lost two of last three to Edmonton and Winnipeg and they are poised to slam fist on panic button.
4. (4) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (5-5): Had some flaws exposed in loss to McPherson-led Als.
5. (5) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (5-5): Three straight losses is taking some air out of those early-season party balloons.
6. (6) B.C. LIONS (3-7): Getting talent back from the NFL and the DL and ready for a second-half push.
7. (7) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (3-7): An eye-opening victory over the Riders, but a lot of work still to do.
8. (8) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (2-8): New GM Eric Tillman has a big mess to clean up.
JUICY NUMBERS — 8
QB sacks recorded by Argos in loss to B.C. on Saturday. Toronto entered the game with 10 in their previous nine games.
FYI
The Riders dumped WR Prechae Rodriguez and placed KR Dominique Dorsey on the nine-game injured Tuesday. Both were big off-season acquisitions. The Bombers, it should be noted, aren’t interested in Rodriguez, who had 1,099 yards just two years ago… Some numbers that must have Stamps’ brass worried: rookie placekicker Rob Maver has hit just five of his last 12 field-goal attempts after starting the season 15-of-16… A story we should have passed along last week: two thumbs way up to Lions cornerback Davis Sanchez, who donated his entire paycheque in the game vs. Montreal to Tony Proudfoot’s ALS fund to raise dough for research into the degenerative disease. Proudfoot, the former Alouettes player/broadcaster and one of the classiest men in the CFL, was diagnosed with ALS — Lou Gehrig disease — three years ago… If Ticats running back DeAndra’ Cobb isn’t looking over his shoulder already, he now should be. Hamilton added Conte Cuttino on Tuesday — he was an Big South all-star last year with Stony Brook — partly because Cobb’s numbers have dropped off so dramatically. Cobb had 1,217 yards a year ago, but has had 79 yards rushing in the last two games with 49 coming on a meaningless last play in the 27-6 loss to Montreal… Politicians in Hamilton are considering a third potential stadium locale since the end of August. And you wonder if the organizers of the Pan Am Games scheduled for 2015 are reconsidering giving their thumbs up to the joint Hamilton/Toronto bid.
